Lawyer with expertise in Migration Law to join VLA and advocate for clients seeking protection. Make a real difference working with disadvantaged clients and contribute to improving service delivery and law reform initiatives.
Full time maximum term position up to December 2025 (part time considered)Salary range: $87,799 - $98,901 (pro rata) plus super and salary packagingUp to $15,900 in salary packaging and hybrid WFH & office modelAbout the role In this position, you will provide legal advice and handle cases in the field of civil law, with a specific focus on Migration Law. You will act as a lawyer for clients in courts and tribunals, including duty services, casework and advice services. Your role will involve advocating effectively for clients with a particular focus on assisting asylum seekers who have been refused protection by the Department of Home Affairs under the Migration Act 1958 and Migration Regulations 1994.
Additionally, you will have the opportunity to contribute to community legal education, participate in law reform initiatives, and engage in various projects undertaken by VLA. Building strong relationships with VLA personnel, court staff, community legal centres, and social justice organisations will also be an important aspect of this role.
This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country. About you Capacity to work as an advocate and caseworker in civil law matters, with a particular focus on assisting asylum seekers in Migration law matters, with knowledge of or practical experience in relevant court and tribunal procedures.Ability to provide written and verbal legal advice within limited time constraints.Excellent interpersonal skills including the capacity to communicate effectively with clients who experience social and economic disadvantage.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others and capacity to exercise self-care while undertaking challenging work.About Victoria Legal Aid We provide legal representation to those who need it most.
