NAAJA's legal practice provides high quality, culturally proficient and accessible advice, casework and court advocacy in both criminal and civil law.What we offerSalary packaging options up to $18,450 per annum tax freeRemote allowance of $3,300 per annum (if applicable)Annual airfare allowance6 weeks annual leave3 weeks personal leaveRelocation allowanceAbout the roleNAAJA's Civil Law Practice is seeking a dedicated Civil Lawyer to join our Housing and Social Security (HSS) team.
This role focuses on achieving justice for Aboriginal people by addressing key drivers of disadvantage through civil law practice, including issues like tenancy, child protection, police accountability, and social security.
The role offers the opportunity to work on diverse civil matters and participate in remote community legal clinics across the Northern Territory.Key DutiesUndertake civil litigation and casework in line with NAAJA's priorities.Provide legal advice to clients, including conducting urban and remote advice clinics.Travel to remote communities (up to 4 nights) for advice clinics as required.Identify and report on policy and law reform issues relevant to Aboriginal communities.Collaborate with NAAJA staff, government agencies, and community groups.Prepare reports on casework and operations.Refer clients to other agencies when appropriate.Key Selection CriteriaEligibility for admission as a solicitor in the NT and High Court of Australia.Experience in civil law and ability to manage cases with limited supervision.Willingness to travel and work in remote Aboriginal communities.Strong communication skills, including cross-cultural awareness.Ability to work within a diverse team and meet deadlines.DesirableDemonstrated cultural competence and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.Understanding of NAAJA's role and functions.RequirementsCurrent drivers licenceAbility to obtain a "Working with Children Clearance" (Ochre Card) upon commencementSatisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practiceAbility and willingness to travel to remote areasHow to applyApplicants for this position must submit a cover letter and resume addressing the essential criteria.Enquiries can be sent to ****** more information see position description Lawyer – Civil Law (HSS Specific)Suitably qualified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.
