Primary Objective: Provide high-level technical and logistical support to the Regional Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping (REALM) multidisciplinary team.
Context Statement: The Flora and Fauna and Rangelands Divisions are jointly developing the REALM mapping program.
The mapping will integrate vegetation, soil, and landscape information to develop uniform environmental mapping across the Northern Territory.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead logistics planning and undertake fieldwork, sometimes in remote areas for extended periods.
Ensure field equipment is maintained and available for safe operation including four-wheel drive vehicles, mechanical soil coring rigs, communication, and scientific measuring equipment.
As part of a multidisciplinary REALM program, work collaboratively to plan and undertake natural resource survey fieldwork to collect a range of landscape and vegetation related data.
Collate and secure soil and vegetation field data into corporate soil and vegetation databases.
As part of a team, manipulate field data with geographic information system (GIS) software to compile geodatabases and prepare technical reports.
Communicate with government agencies, traditional owners, industry groups, land managers, and land use planners.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
Ability to plan, organise and undertake field work in small teams.
An understanding of and/or experience in natural resource assessment techniques using methodologies established for soil, land and vegetation characterisation.
Knowledge of and/or experience in using computer systems, including Microsoft products and GIS software.
Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a range of people including scientific and non-scientific and diverse cultural backgrounds.
Ability to work collaboratively in teams while working independently to deliver tasks responsibly and efficiently.
An ability and willingness to develop professionally in land resource assessment.
Current NT Driver's Licence or equivalent, and ability to drive a manual vehicle.
Desirable:
A relevant scientific or technical qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
An interest in and knowledge of northern Australian landscapes.
Ability to operate and maintain four-wheel drive vehicles and mechanical field equipment.
