About This Opportunity Our Laboratory Floor Managers play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and collaborative environment.
We are looking for a motivated, energetic and experienced professional in laboratory safety and operations.

The position works with various stakeholders across the School, including staff, students and visitors.
You will directly support and provide advice relating to all aspects of laboratory operations.
It will have the important role to ensure and oversee high health, safety and wellness (HSW) standards, as well as consistent and fair allocation of resources.

Key responsibilities will include: Health Safety and Wellness Demonstrate and promote a positive laboratory safety culture.
Deliver local laboratory inductions in partnership with other laboratory managers and the School operations team.
Undertake regular health, safety and wellness checks (both informal walk arounds and formal audits/inspections) in the laboratory and develop (and execute if appropriate) corrective action plans.
Monitor laboratory safety infrastructure and report defects (e.g.
relating to safety stations, gas alarm, building security, test and tag etc.
).
Be responsible for local storage and tracking of high-risk materials (e.g.
chemicals of security concern, radioactive sources, poisons and drugs).
Advise on standard and specialty safety equipment needs and ensure it is available for users and visitors (e.g.
PPE, spill kits, emergency response equipment).
Support emergency response activities (such as spill clean-ups) including an on-call roster.
Maintain laboratory health and safety-related documentation.
Laboratory Management and Operations Demonstrate and promote a positive laboratory research culture.
Liaise with users to support, coordinate, and maintain oversight of day-to-day activities in your assigned laboratory space or space(s).
Train and certify users in use of available laboratory equipment.
Provide advice to users to develop and maintain high quality operating protocols, standard operating procedures, and risk assessments.
Act as a primary contact to support laboratory users procuring, storing, using, and ultimately disposing of chemicals, biological and/or other hazardous materials.
Monitor chemical inventories in laboratories—across multiple groups of users—including keeping inventories up to date, monitoring quantities stored against maximum allowable quantities and performing periodic stock takes.
Support procurement, installation, commissioning (and subsequent decommissioning) of laboratory equipment (including developing risk assessments and standard operating procedures) in collaboration with end-users, contractors, and facilities teams.
Support equipment maintenance, repair, and calibration.
Support allocation and booking of resources where required.
Monitor standard and specialty consumable needs and ensure sufficient stocks are maintained.
Support laboratory certification and licensing processes (for example PC2 requirements, scheduled drugs and poisons, or radiation certifications).
Ensure a high housekeeping standard is met.

About You Essential A degree in science or chemical engineering (or closely related field), with at least three (3) years relevant experience.
Established laboratory operations/management and instrumentation experience in at least one of the School research areas.
Knowledge of chemical safety legislation including handling, storage, labelling and disposal.
Knowledge of legislative requirements and operating procedures or major areas of laboratory operations such as waste disposal, labelling, autoclaves and pressure vessels, risk assessments and incident reporting.
Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
Ability to work in a constructive, outcomes-focused manner, and to work collaboratively with management, peers, team members and client groups.
Flexible and adaptable to change and willingness to work, and take initiative, across a range of activities and locations.
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks and work independently.
Experience in workplace health and safety-related practices relevant to the types of risks found in the School.
Demonstrated experience in leading change, particularly in enhancing a positive safety and research culture.
Desirable Knowledge of Queensland Food Act and Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.
Workplace Health and Safety certifications.
Experience in bioengineering, biomedical and/or bioprocess laboratories (especially in PC2/OGTR facilities).
Knowledge of university operating procedures.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, etc.
