ROLE SUMMARY:The Laboratory Assistant at Reddam House is responsible for the maintenance, preparation, and organisation of the science laboratories across the school. This role ensures that lab spaces are safe, well-organised, and equipped for science classes, experiments, and assessments. The Laboratory Assistant plays a key part in supporting teachers and fostering a productive, secure learning environment for students.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Laboratory and Equipment Maintenance Perform regular inspections of all lab equipment and supplies, arranging repairs or replacements as needed to keep labs in optimal condition.Maintain an orderly and safe lab environment by adhering to safety standards and protocols, including the safe handling and storage of all equipment and materials.Preparation for Classes and Experiments Set up lab equipment, materials, and resources for class experiments and practical assessments, coordinating with teachers to meet curriculum needs.Follow experiment requests to ensure all necessary materials are prepared and readily available, allowing teachers to focus on lesson delivery.Safely dispose of hazardous chemicals and materials following established safety procedures.Inventory and Resource Management Maintain an up-to-date inventory of lab materials, equipment, and chemicals, ensuring all items are labeled and stored correctly.Regularly update and manage a digital Science Equipment/Materials Database, tracking item names, locations, quantities, and purchase dates.Proactively order supplies and materials as needed, notifying the Head of Science Department of any upcoming needs.Cleaning and Organisational Duties Clean and maintain all lab spaces, including washing and organising glassware, sinks, and other equipment after each use.Conduct regular tidying of prep rooms, storage areas, and lab workstations to ensure all areas are presentable and ready for use.Compliance with Safety Standards Ensure that all chemicals are correctly labelled and stored according to safety regulations, including color-coding and safe storage.Produce and manage Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals, providing copies to teachers as needed for reference during experiments.Report any safety issues or equipment malfunctions immediately to the Head of the Science Department.General Support Duties Undertake other duties as directed by the Head of Science Department or School Principals, contributing to the overall efficiency of the department.THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:Previous experience in a laboratory environment is preferred, especially within an educational setting.Strong organisational skills, with attention to detail and an ability to maintain thorough records.Understanding of laboratory safety protocols, handling of chemicals, and equipment maintenance.Familiarity with lab management or inventory software is a plus.Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues or manage unexpected challenges in a lab setting.PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES Demonstrates a strong commitment to safety and protocol adherence.Takes initiative in identifying maintenance needs or resource shortages before they impact lab operations.Flexible and able to respond to the changing needs of the school environment.Communicates effectively with staff and works as part of a team to support the department's goals.Maintains high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and accuracy in all tasks.QUALIFICATIONS Relevant certifications or coursework in laboratory work or a science-related field.Current Working with Children Check.First Aid Certification (preferred).SAFEGUARDING STATEMENTInspired Education Group is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff, volunteers and other third parties to share this commitment.
