Junior trainee Ecologist / Botanist (AQF level 7) – Abel Ecology, Cooma Abel Ecology is seeking a junior trainee botanist/ecologist to join our team. We are looking for someone with basic skills in plant identification, plant community identification and/or vegetation mapping. It is a junior role that would suit someone with an interest in learning from senior experienced scientists. Be willing to commit two years to learning the role.
About Abel Ecology We are a small but well-established company that specialises in ecology and bushfire. Our head office is in Springwood and our regional office is in Cooma in the Snowy Mountains. Our objective is to offer high-quality services to clients in government, commercial and residential sectors. The successful applicant will be joining a team of around 10 excellent, dedicated professionals with a range of skills and expertise.
About our work Our ecological work includes flora surveys, vegetation mapping, biodiversity monitoring, habitat monitoring, threatened species monitoring, management plans and impact assessments (including BDARs). Our Snowy Mountains projects are mainly in high country landscapes, with other projects across NSW.
About the role The primary objective of the role is to be trained in technical expertise on ecological projects undertaken by Abel Ecology, with a particular focus on the botanical aspects. You would be learning extended skills in:
· conducting botanical surveys
· identifying plant community types (PCTs)
· preparing vegetation maps (with our in-house GIS specialist)
· plant identification
· providing written input to ecological reports
Essential qualifications and experience · AQF level 7 Tertiary qualifications in Australian ecology, Australian botany and GIS.
· Australian citizenship
· Resident within daily commuting distance of our Cooma office
Desirable experience and qualities · Willingness and physical fitness to conduct fieldwork in high altitude, regional and remote locations
Familiarity with high country flora · Excellent English communication and report writing skills for legal purposes.
