CHOICE is offering an eager and curious Intern the opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge in investigations and consumer advocacy journalism.
Want to make a difference as well as work towards your study goals? Keen to explore consumer affairs as well as gain journalism industry experience? This is a unique learning opportunity with a highly reputable and independent not-for-profit publication. You will gain invaluable experience with an organisation that has a long track record of making a difference.
CHOICE has been Australia's go-to consumer advocacy and media organisation since 1959.
We work every day to help people navigate complex markets, stop businesses from treating people unfairly, and fight for governments to create laws in the interests of people, not big corporations.
About the opportunity We want you to bring your ideas, enthusiasm, and energy to our Editorial and Investigations team.
In return, we will provide you with real-world journalism assignments supervised and supported in a face-to-face environment.
Research and contribute to investigative stories. Learn about pitching story ideas to editors. Develop your copywriting skills on quick turnaround news stories. Gain insights into how to leverage social media in your work. Understand how to leverage audience engagement and performance metrics to improve your reach. Working from a Melbourne CBD office, you will work closely with CHOICE Investigative Journalist Jarni Blakkarly and the broader Editorial and Investigations team based in Sydney.
About you You are currently actively enrolled in a journalism undergraduate or postgraduate degree and are looking to gain on-the-job experience alongside your studies.
A confident writer with a love for concise and informative prose. Curious about consumer topics and issues affecting Australians (e.g., scams, cost of living). Believe in the role of public interest journalism in holding businesses to account. Eager and willing to learn new skills and take on feedback. You must be able to attend the Melbourne CBD office for two full days per week for a period of 8-10 weeks starting February or March 2025.
