About the Role Join a dynamic team contributing to one of Australia's most significant national projects, the 2026 Census. As a Development and Programming Officer/Java Developer (APS6), you will play a key role in managing and enhancing Census systems while contributing to the development of new features and technologies. This role offers the opportunity to work across multiple Census teams, including Enumeration, Digital Services, Workforce Management, Customer Experience, Dissemination, and Post Enumeration Survey.
You'll collaborate with stakeholders and technical teams to ensure solutions meet business needs and maintain critical system performance, security, and reliability. This is a fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative environment, where your contributions will directly impact Australian communities.
Key Responsibilities Collaborate with project teams to transition new systems into Census operations.Conduct research and analysis to identify trends, and prepare project briefs for informed decision-making.Design, develop, test, deploy, and operate business application solutions to meet functional and non-functional requirements.Apply best practices in technology stack usage, architecture, and application delivery.Assist in developing strategies and roadmaps for technical solutions.Liaise with stakeholders to understand business needs and ensure seamless communication.Monitor production systems, respond to incidents, and apply IT service management best practices.Work with partners and vendors to resolve critical issues and leverage expertise for design decisions.Mentor and support team members while fostering continuous improvement.Seek opportunities to enhance operational health, including performance, security, and efficiency.Essential Skills and Qualifications Software engineering and/or enterprise application integration experience, with relevant ICT qualifications.Strong client liaison, communication, and negotiation skills.Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.Analytical skills to identify requirements and design robust solutions.Passion for quality coding and attention to detail.Problem-solving abilities for complex business and system challenges.If you're passionate about technology, enjoy solving complex problems, and want to make a meaningful impact, this is your chance to contribute to the success of the 2026 Census.
