What you will do as an InvestigatorBe responsible for investigating potential breaches of the consumer and fair trading provisions of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth). This may include assessing evidence, interviewing witnesses, briefing legal advisers as well as preparing and presenting updates and recommendations to the Enforcement Committee and Commission.Engage with various external stakeholders, including consumers, businesses, and government agencies, so clear written and verbal communication skills are important.Possess a good, working understanding of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), including the Australian Consumer Law, or the ability to quickly attain this understanding. You will also possess an ability to objectively and strategically assess information and potential evidence in a timely and efficient manner.Identify logical next steps and the most suitable resolution for investigations, including by administrative means or by court action and persuasively communicate the reasons for decisions and recommendation.Successful candidates at the APS5 level will demonstrate a greater degree of responsibility for delivery of outcomes and will work more independently on a range of investigations and projects.What you will do as a Project OfficerEnsure the overall delivery and strategic focus of projects in the Division are in line with the Compliance and Enforcement Policy, plans and directions.Be responsible for managing and contributing to the delivery of compliance projects and activities, including planning, monitoring, reporting, research and analysis.Provide advice to senior management on trends and patterns to support policy and legislative reform and contribute to the delivery of strategic engagement activities with key industry, stakeholder and consumer organisations, including participation in formal discussion and decision making forums.Prepare (and/or review as appropriate), for approval, internal and external documents including submissions, staff papers, notices, undertakings, correspondence, reports, minutes, briefs, reports and media releases.Work collaboratively within a geographically dispersed team to manage joint projects and tasks, including tracking progress and workflow, meeting milestones and deadlines and develop and maintain effective working relationships and professional networks with internal and external stakeholders.Successful candidates at the APS5 level will demonstrate a greater degree of responsibility for delivery of outcomes and will work more independently on a range projects.About YouIn order to succeed in the Investigator role, you will have:
a good understanding of, or the ability to quickly acquire a good understanding of:the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and Australian Consumer Law, other relevant legislation and the role, purpose and objectives of the ACCCconsumer, regulatory, competition and/or economic efficiency issues.an ability to:effectively engage and work collaboratively with other people, including the ability to influence, persuade and inform peopletake ownership, exercise sound judgement and work under direction to make reasonable decisions on issueswork in a flexible environment and adapt to meet immediate and future challengesthink strategically and research, investigate and analyse issues to develop solutions and make recommendations in line with strategic objectivesbe accountable for accurate, timely and quality outcomes.the following job specific criteria are also highly desirable, but not essential:tertiary qualifications in law, economics, or related fields and/or relevant experience undertaking investigationsCertificate IV in Government Investigations, or the ability to obtain. Successful candidates will be expected to obtain this qualification within 6 months of commencing an investigation role.In order to succeed in the Project Officer role, you will have:
a good understanding of, or the ability to quickly acquire a good understanding of:Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (CCA), other relevant legislation and the role, purpose and objectives of the ACCCinterpreting, applying and understanding legal or technical information.an ability to:undertake objective, systematic analysis to draw accurate conclusions and support evidence-based decision makingthink strategically and research, investigate and analyse issues to develop solutions and make recommendations in line with strategic objectivesdraft documents and demonstrate experience in written communication, including preparing quality documentation such as correspondence, reports, internal papers and briefs, legal documents, and external-facing material such as consumer and industry guidancetake initiative and use creative problem-solving techniquesfacilitate and support effective communication within teams, across work areas, and between senior leaders and build and maintain networks of contacts and represent the organisation professionally.tertiary qualifications in law, economics, public policy or similar fields are highly desirable, but not essential.How To ApplyYou will be asked to respond to the statement of claims in no more than 800 words and submit your resume with key outcomes or what you are most proud of in each role you have held (2 pages maximum).
