Who we are In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.
As caretakers for Melbourne's water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.
Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet, run through a backyard sprinkler, or kayak down the Yarra—we're there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world's cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home —just as we have for over 130 years.
If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what's right, you're in the right place.
About the Role We currently have a casual Interpretation Officer role within our Corporate Communications team based at our Western Treatment Plant in Werribee. This role involves the delivery of digital and in-person education programs, both across Melbourne Water's key sites and at community events held at various locations throughout the week and weekends.
This role interacts frequently with the community, students, and teachers in a range of environments to enable a deeper understanding of all aspects of the water cycle and encourage behaviour change.
Reporting to the Visitation and Events Lead, the Interpretation Officer aims to improve water literacy and build trust and connection with our customers and community, through the delivery of education programs in line with the Water Literacy Strategy.

Contribute to the evaluation and continuous improvement of sessions through feedback forms and team discussions with the Education Advisor. Be adaptable, thoughtful, and responsive to a range of diverse community questions and concerns that may not always relate to the direct messaging of the Water Literacy program. About you: Understanding of the natural and urban water cycles, knowledge of current water issues and topics related to waterway health. Highly developed social and personal skills with a friendly, engaging, affiliative approach. Highly developed verbal communication and engaging interpretation skills to deliver complex and technical concepts to diverse audiences. Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with school-age children (primary and secondary level) - previous teaching (formal and/or informal), tourism or interpretation experience will be highly regarded. Knowledge of adult learning principles and techniques, along with experience in modifying educational material to suit varying ages and experiences. Demonstrated ability or capacity to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team. Understanding of relevant Occupational Health and Safety issues. A working knowledge of the Victorian water industry is highly desirable. Proficiency in safety compliance working with children. Our people are fuelled by passion, and with safety at the forefront, we have an unwavering sense of purpose, and are on a mission to protect every Melburnian's way of life, one drop at a time.
We walk the talk when it comes to flexible working – but that's not all. Our culture of purpose, safety, results, and learning permeates everything we do. We're dedicated to doing what's right, and this commitment extends to the meaningful work we do in a supportive and inclusive culture that encourages you to make the most of your talents.
Our long-standing commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTIQA+ individuals, people living with disability, mature age and young jobseekers from all cultures can apply with confidence knowing they are safe, affirmed, and celebrated.
