The opportunity The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics.
Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Senior HSE Advisor will work with the SKA-Low team to continuously refine our best-in-class safety culture.
At present, the SKA project is in the construction phase and the site is under the management and control of the Principal Contractor.
Over time, the Principal Contractor will hand back the site which will then be operated by the SKA-Low team for the 50-year planned operation of the telescope.

This role will work with SKAO's construction contracts, members of the SKA Site Management Team, and SKA internal construction teams to assure a safe construction project on site, and it will support the transition of the site from the project delivery phase into operation of the telescope.

This role will spend 50% of time on site.
Travel to and from site will be via 9-seater aircraft, flying from Geraldton to site.

Your duties will include: Coordinate with construction teams to ensure that all activities align with the SKA-Low HSE Management Plan.
Actively support the development of innovative best practice solutions to significantly improve HSE performance both culturally and from a regulatory perspective.
Manage and develop the HSE team to support the construction and operational phases of the SKA-Low Telescope.
Assist with the development and delivery of monthly HSE reports, including key performance indicators (KPIs), compliance metrics, and incident investigations.
Oversee the identification and management of critical risks, including construction hazards, environmental impacts, and psychosocial risks and lead significant incident investigations.

Salary: AU$114,219 - AU$123,605 plus 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need: Essential Relevant nationally recognised qualifications in a relevant discipline such as Health, Safety & Environment, or risk management coupled with demonstrated experience in an HSE role.
Knowledge and understanding of HSE Legislation, codes of practice, management systems, and standards.
Experience managing HSE compliance, reporting, and assurance activities in construction or operational settings, with a strong ability to engage and influence stakeholders across diverse teams, including contractors, regulatory bodies, and project leadership.
Experience influencing and effecting impactful HSE changes in team culture.
Experience in a leadership position, or evidence of potential to fulfil a leadership position, promoting diversity and developing an inclusive, high-performing culture.
Desirable Expertise in applying Australian HSE standards to construction activities, including environmental management and emergency response.
Extensive experience in conducting incident investigations and applying Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodologies.
Membership of a recognised professional institution (e.g.
AIHS).
