What we do The Infrastructure and Operations division maintains national critical infrastructure for Services Australia and across government. We deliver a robust, secure, and resilient ICT environment so Australian citizens can access government services 24x7.
The Core Infrastructure branch delivers network, telecommunications, gateway, data centre facilities, cloud connectivity and computing (mid-range and mainframe) and storage infrastructure. Our cutting-edge mainframe infrastructure is the largest in the country, supporting the Centrelink, Medicare, and Child Support programs. Our network covers more than 1,000 locations across Australia and supports secure network and gateway services for 12 other government agencies.
About the role We are seeking to fill roles for both Infrastructure Engineers and Network Engineers within the branch.
Infrastructure Engineer: The Core Infrastructure Branch Network Operations Centre (NOC) is a Canberra based physical facility. It hosts multiple monitoring dashboards and associated equipment designed to support the Network Operations Centre team to monitor our ICT networks, identify incidents, troubleshoot problems and track issues. You will work closely with other operational teams across the organisation including the 24 x 7 Operations team, the Critical Situation Management Team, the Cyber Security Operations Centre and the Services Australia Operations Centre to improve system availability for both staff and customers.
Infrastructure Engineers are responsible for network availability through standard operating and monitoring procedures and have knowledge of and experience with carrier network technologies and the Australian telecommunications industry. They will also manage and coordinate the operations of the various telecommunications arrangements with vendors. This includes the oversight and coordination of works to ensure site network connectivity across more than 600 locations Australia wide. It is desirable that you have knowledge and experience with procurement and contract management processes and relevant rules together with hands on administration experience with network management and monitoring systems and/or network automation platforms and techniques.
Network Engineer: Network Engineers within the Data Centre and Network team are responsible for the design, operation and management of the agency's Data Centre network, National Wireless LAN, and emergency/mobile office capabilities. The Data Centre network provides connectivity to numerous computing platforms including Openstack/Openshift private cloud, x86 VMware, Oracle and IBM Midrange and IBM mainframe. The Data Centre network infrastructure includes a large-scale multi-site Cisco ACI Fabric and F5 hardware and virtual appliances deployed for application server load balancing. WAN, LAN and Wireless networks are a mix of in-house managed and vendor managed environments and are based on Cisco technologies. The team also maintain and manage DNS, DHCP and NTP services.
Network Engineers also work closely with other technical staff within the branch and division to develop solutions, deliver projects, resolve incidents and problems impacting system availability or performance. They will also implement and manage cyber controls to ensure compliance with security policy and best practice. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in large scale or complex data centre networking or WAN/LAN environments, including experience with network routing protocols, including BGP and OSPF and software defined networking technologies.
Work Environment Applicants may be required to be on an after-hours on-call roster or undertake work outside of normal business hours.
