The Australian Institute of Marine Science is Australia's tropical marine research agency.
We are a trusted advisor, a partner and employer of choice, and we value integrity, innovation, collaboration and respect. AIMS' research of Australia's tropical marine ecosystems guides their effective environmental management and contributes to our understanding of similar ecosystems around the world.
Our research seeks to deliver practical benefit to all Australians and supports the sustainable use of our tropical marine estate. Governments, reef managers, industry and the wider community look to our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions about our iconic Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf, and Arafura and Timor Seas. AIMS expert teams at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique datasets, cutting-edge laboratories, and a fleet of modern research vessels.
About this exciting opportunity As a Darwin based member of the Indigenous Partnerships Team, this Indigenous Partnerships Coordinator role will help implement the Indigenous Partnerships Plan, Policy and Protocols across the AIMS portfolio. The role will work with AIMS research staff and collaborators. The role will help establish meaningful marine science partnerships with Traditional Owners of sea country where AIMS research takes place, with a particular focus on AIMS research in the Northern Territory.
This position will coordinate a range of activities that assist AIMS staff and collaborators to engage and develop sound relationships with Traditional Owners especially in the Northern Territory, for 2-way exchange of scientific and Traditional information about marine research and also to assist non-Indigenous AIMS staff to better understand cultural perspectives. You will play a key role in ensuring that Traditional Owners understand and are fully informed about proposed research and assisting researchers to understand and respond to Traditional Owner concerns. Your project and time management skills will ensure you're able to plan and undertake engagement activities with tight external deadlines, while also being sensitive and responsive to culturally appropriate protocols and practice.
About you You will have extensive experience and/or have tertiary level qualifications in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, Indigenous science, land and sea management, marine science, marine science management, social science or natural resource management. Your Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander ancestry combined with knowledge of First Nations Sea Country issues and the evolving political, social and cultural context of First Nations issues in Australia particularly across the Northern Territory, positions you well to authentically communicate with and provide a bridge between Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences in a dignified and culturally sensitive manner.
Your demonstrated effective cross-cultural communication, including using a range of styles to present sometimes complex information to diverse audiences, will enable you to identify areas of synergy between AIMS' research interests and capability, and the science needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups. This will provide a basis for the co-development of future collaborative projects to meet mutual scientific needs. Your exceptional time management skills will ensure your able to manage multiple completing deadlines, and work to tight timeframes.
