About – Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Student and Scholarly Services
CAPS provides psychological counselling, therapeutic group interventions, training, supervision and consultancy services to the University of Melbourne student and staff community.
Student and Scholarly Services provides student administration and services from recruitment and point of enquiry to graduation. This team also delivers wellbeing and scholarly services to students and staff.
About the Role
The Indigenous Counsellor provides culturally appropriate psychological counselling, training, and consultancy to support the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the University of Melbourne. The role focuses on triage, initial assessment, short-term treatment, and referrals, with an emphasis on high-risk situations, and involves planning and delivering group programs, workshops, mental health training, and online self-help resources. Additionally, the Indigenous Counsellor offers advice on Indigenous mental health and supervises clinical interns at CAPS.
Responsibilities include:
Provide a high standard of psychological counselling including initial assessment, with an emphasis on identification and management of clients in high-risk situations, and appropriate referral and/or shorter-term treatment intervention. Participate in regular professional development and case-management/peer review processes to identify and address client management issues and maintain currency of practice particularly as it relates to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student support and culturally safe practices. Provide a high standard of in-person and online psychological service activities that are relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff including workshops, therapeutic group interventions, mental health and wellbeing literacy programs, consultancy and other related programs. About You

You will also have:
The qualification/education-related selection criteria in the PD Experience in the provision of counselling and psychotherapeutic services, including with people from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Demonstrated ability and experience to plan, deliver and evaluate in-person and online therapeutic group interventions, workshops, training programs and consultancies. Demonstrated experience in the assessment and management of risk and complex clinical matters, cognitive and emotional, mental health, and developmental issues, including case planning and review, within a self-management framework.
