Description Overview
Sydney Academy of Chess is looking for highly motivated individuals who have an interest in teaching chess to primary school students.
This will involve:
Preparing for lessons in advance
Organising your own transport and being punctual to classes
Managing the behaviour of students in the classroom
Recording attendance and submitting rolls into our database
Selection Criteria
Strong understanding of chess and passion for the game
Minimum Fide rating of 1800 or equivalent (enthusiastic candidates rated 1200-1799 may be accepted if they are willing to undertake additional chess study and training)
Competent level of knowledge in the use of chess software (additional training can be provided in this area).
Basic computer skills and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
Motivation to teach and inspire children
Ability to effectively communicate and build trust with both children and adults
Excellent organisational and problem solving skills to adapt to changing circumstances
Previous chess coaching experience of 12 months or more is highly desirable.
Enthusiastic candidates with less or no experience can still succeed with additional training and mentoring, but depending on their skills they may need to begin in a casual role.
Please note that all successful candidates must complete a Working with Children Check (
First aid training and flu/whooping cough vaccinations are also required, and these are arranged at the company's expense.
To be successful in this role, you will be punctual, responsible, and ethical when working autonomously in schools.
You will be a positive role model for students and a good representative for the company.
We will support you with on-the-job training and provide you with the resources; lesson plans, worksheets, and awards to help you to succeed.
Work hours would be between 8:00am to 4:00pm or 9:00am to 5:00pm.
We recommend that you drive to chess classes, if possible, as you may be travelling to different areas of Sydney.
