THE ROLE The Head of Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) fulfils a key role within the Senior School and is responsible for, under the direction of the Dean of Studies and Head of Senior School, the educational leadership within the HSIE Department and wider College community. This leadership encompasses curriculum, pedagogy and professional growth and development of staff. The Head of HSIE is responsible for leading and transforming a team of talented educators to enable best practice learning and engagement for students in Years 7-12.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES The key responsibilities of the role include (but are not limited to):
Teaching and Learning in HSIE and Humanities:
Lead a high quality supportive learning environment where learner engagement and academic improvement are priorities. Promote effective, research informed instructional practices with effective consultation and program evaluation. Lead the development of improved pedagogy for colleagues within the Department, ensuring programs embrace academic inclusivity and diversity and cater for the needs of all students. Lead teaching staff in the implementation of future syllabus changes in HSIE. Be an active member of, and contribute positively to, the Senior School Head of Department team. Lead teachers in the employment of effective classroom management strategies, promoting a culture of high academic standards and achievement. Lead the department in the provision of effective assessment and feedback, using both formative and summative assessment principles. Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting:
Maintain and complete NESA requirements for HSIE for both RoSA and the Higher School Certificate. Ensure appropriate curriculum documents are maintained (including academic programs, scope and sequences, assessment schedules and HSC student documents). Integrate technology and the use of LMS (SEQTA) into classroom teaching practices as appropriate. Liaise with the Dean of Studies – Senior School to ensure appropriate documentation is available for Registration and Accreditation. Check, monitor and provide effective feedback on student reports to staff within the department. Attend Student Information Evenings as required, providing appropriate information for students and parents related to subject selection. Participate in Student Progress Meetings and support the HSIE team to develop strong partnerships with parents to improve student outcomes. Record and liaise with the Dean of Studies – Senior School concerning students failing to meet assessment deadlines. Ensure all deadlines set for programming, assessment and reporting are met by members of the department. Develop, implement and maintain relevant resources for the teaching of the subject. Develop, maintain and review the Department Handbook. Establish systems of regular review for programs and resources. Meet record keeping, reporting and student profiling expectations and deadlines. Manage the budget for the Department, including oversight and tracking of all purchases and resources. Department Professional Growth and Development:
Develop staff through facilitation of mentoring, professional dialogue and professional learning. Development of staff is focused on: high impact and engaging classroom practice capacity to respond to individual student needs quality formative and summative assessment design curriculum knowledge and design self-management administrative accountabilities digital practices developing high quality feedback for students Lead department implementation of annual professional learning goals. Provide guidance and facilitate development of newly appointed teachers. Co-ordinate the work of the department through well planned and regular meetings. Be responsible for the overall efficiency, professional attitude and morale of the department, and be responsible for helping staff to know how they can best contribute to the well-being of the students they teach. Be responsible for overseeing teacher programs, mark books and assessment details, and for the overall development and co-ordination of the department. Be responsible for co-operation and co-ordination between departments. Maintain and continuously improve subject discipline knowledge, skills and pedagogy. Maintain awareness of trends, educational research and data informed practice in teaching. Support the College Code of Conduct and Behaviour Management program:
Apply a care-based, restorative and solution-focused approach to managing student issues in consultation with parents as appropriate. Keep the Head of House informed of significant student issues. Be alert to, and act upon, instances endangering student safety. Support teachers within the department with any escalating student issues. Be punctual and diligent in classroom, playground and other supervisory duties. Be courteous, firm, consistent and fair in dealings with students. Respond appropriately to breaches of the College's behaviour management and uniform policies. Pastoral Care Program:
Actively participate in College pastoral care and well-being programs, including being a House Mentor for a group of students. Attend one College camp during the year, involving at least two nights away. Lead and support students' academic, pastoral and spiritual needs in the roles of classroom teacher and House Mentor. Other duties of all teachers:
Actively participate in the College Cocurricular Program. Carry out supervisory duties as required and rostered. Participate in department meetings, school meetings and College briefings, some of which may occur outside normal school hours. Model exemplary behaviour reflective of the values and ethos of the College. Any other duties as determined by the Principal. REQUIREMENTS Demonstrate a commitment to the vision and mission of Trinity Anglican College and the Anglican Schools Commission (ASC). Comply with all Child Protection Legislation. Comply with all Workplace Health and Safety Information. Comply with the College Code of Conduct and Network Agreement. Positively promote the College, both within the school and in the wider community. Maintain confidentiality about students, staff and College business. Respond promptly to parent or student concerns. QUALIFICATIONS A recognised teaching qualification with a specialisation in an area of HSIE. Post-graduate qualifications in educational leadership would be advantageous. Current Working with Children Check and National Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC). Current First Aid certificate is desirable. EXPERIENCE It is anticipated that the Head of HSIE would have all or some of the following:
Teaching qualifications and experience with a specialisation in a branch of HSIE and/or post-graduate studies in a field of Humanities. Experience teaching to a wide variety of Year groups, including Stage 6. Experience in a faith-based school setting and a willingness to support and contribute to the Anglican ethos and values of Trinity Anglican College. Attendance at appropriate professional development activities relating to teaching. Experience and knowledge of current practices in education and trends. SKILLS Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong interpersonal skills and experience in maintaining cooperative partnerships within an organisation. Skilled in negotiating conflicting interests to ensure a positive outcome. Be a team player with experience working within a team and independently. Well-organized and committed. Creative and energetic. High order critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions. Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines. A willingness to do what it takes to get the job done, coupled with a flexible approach and pleasant manner. KEY SELECTION CRITERIA The Key Selection Criteria used to select the Head of HSIE and must be addressed in the application are:
Qualifications in, and experience teaching, a subject from the HSIE learning area up to and including Stage 6. Knowledge of current educational issues, particularly in Humanities education. Ability to lead a team effectively and positively in a school environment. Ability to plan, implement and review academic programs. Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and diplomatically with all stakeholders in a school environment to achieve positive outcomes.
