About Eugene
The power to predict and prevent health issues is in our DNA.
Eugene's purpose is to empower every person to act on this knowledge.

Today, we offer at-home medical grade genetic testing, combined with a genetic counselling service to help people predict and prevent health issues before they happen.
Tomorrow, we're working toward creating a world where we can sequence your DNA once and provide you with guidance for life.

Since we launched in 2018, we've supported many thousands of people across Australia, released an Australia first medicare-covered genetic test and are backed by some of the best and brightest health-tech investors.

Eugene is a remote-first organisation, allowing you to work anywhere within Australia, or in-person at our office in Richmond, Victoria.

About the role We're looking for a Head of Engineering to lead our technology team and drive innovation.
You're someone who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and knows how to balance big-picture vision with practical execution.

You'll be comfortable working with ambiguity, understand the complexity of health-tech and are excited to navigate the trade-offs between moving fast and managing the inherent risk and compliance that comes with delivering healthcare as a rapidly scaling organisation.

Reporting directly to the CEO, you'll lead the charge in shaping our tech strategy, make crucial system architecture decisions, and ensure data security and compliance.
You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, guide a high-performing engineering team, and innovate to align our technology with our business goals.

People leadership: Inspire, mentor, and develop the tech team while fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and high performance.
Solution design & architecture: Take ownership of architectural decisions, ensuring scalability, security, and efficiency in our systems.
Delivery focus: Ensure timely and efficient project delivery within our Agile, cross-functional, and remote-friendly teams.
Technical strategy: Collaborate with our founding and executive team, notably product and design, to define how technology can reinforce our competitive advantage and overall strategy.
Then lead the execution of that strategy, anticipate roadblocks, and enable the team to succeed.
Strategy meets compliance: Oversee AI integration in our products, ensure regulatory compliance (e.g., SaMD, TGA certification), and manage secure, scalable data systems that meet compliance standards (e.g., SOC2) while providing the organisation the actionable insights it needs to make good decisions.
Hands-on: We're a small team with big goals.
This is a hands-on role that'll evolve over time.
To begin, you'll wear many hats, including writing & reviewing code, triaging bugs, suggesting code improvements, and managing effective delivery.
As the company and the role evolves, we'll want you to take ownership of the technical strategy and its implementation.
About you 10+ years: of experience working in engineering teams.
Leadership & Technical Expertise: Proven experience leading technology teams in fast-paced environments, with deep knowledge of software architecture, solution design, coding, and agile methodologies.
Experienced in our tech stack: Experience with AWS and serverless architecture, PHP (Laravel), GraphQL, and PostgreSQL is beneficial but not required.
Thrive in ambiguity: You love tackling ambiguous problems in a fast-paced environment with an optimistic and energising attitude.
AI & Regulatory Experience: Familiarity with safely integrating AI into clinical workflows, managing SaMD regulatory implications, and navigating TGA certification for healthcare software products is a big bonus.
Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent communicator able to simplify complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences, with strong empathy and listening skills to ensure all stakeholder needs are addressed.
Budget & Operations Management: Skilled in managing technology budgets, optimizing costs, and implementing standards and protocols for system monitoring, coding, and incident response to maintain efficiency and security.
Benefits We offer a competitive compensation package in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
We value diverse perspectives and the ability to work cross-functionally.
This role provides:
The opportunity to work at a company committed to doing well by doing good.
A remote-first work environment.
Challenging, meaningful problem solving that positively impacts our customers' lives.
A yearly L&D budget to support your professional development and help you stay at the cutting edge of industry trends and technologies.
A monthly wellness budget to encourage self-care and well-being, which we believe are key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
A competitive parental leave policy that provides support and flexibility for new parents.
Hiring process Our hiring process includes:
Phone interview Project based challenge Technical interview Our hiring process is intentionally designed to be simple, effective, and respectful of everyone's time.
We kick off with a phone interview to get to know you and your skills better.
Next, you'll tackle a project or challenge that showcases your abilities.
Finally, if you ace the challenge, we'll invite you to an in-depth interview to discuss your submission and explore how you can contribute to our mission.
