Position Focus: The Head of Education leads the Education department of the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA), the largest museum outside the United Kingdom devoted to British art. The Head of Education develops and advances a vision for education at the museum, creating the framework and strategy for enhancing and managing the Education department's community engagement, partnerships, public outreach, and programs, including the museum's long-standing work with neurodiverse audiences. Reporting to the Deputy Director for Research, the Head of Education is a key member of the Research division's senior management team. Their work will have a significant impact on the activities of all YCBA staff.
The Head of Education fosters innovation and collaboration in teaching with objects in the YCBA's galleries and Study Room. They promote knowledge of the YCBA's collections and exhibitions and work with YCBA staff to ensure effective interpretive strategies for diverse populations. The Head of Education develops educational programs drawing on the resources of the YCBA, as well as the collections of other museums and libraries. They recruit, train, and supervise Yale College undergraduate Student Guides and oversee the museum's docent and internship programs. The Head of Education additionally supervises after-school programs, summer art programs, teacher in-service training, teacher institutes, and workshops, as well as the creation of interpretive materials to further visitor understanding and enjoyment of the YCBA's collections and exhibitions. They seek to expand the YCBA's unique art and medicine programs for medical trainees, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals and its object-focused programs for neurodiverse adults and children. The Head of Education builds on and further develops the YCBA's educational offerings through active collaboration with museum and university colleagues, as well as community partners.
The Head of Education welcomes and engages with the YCBA's diverse audiences, including the general public; students and faculty at Yale University and other colleges and universities; and teachers, students, and families from primary and secondary schools in New Haven and in districts from the broader geographical region. The Head of Education liaises with other cultural, educational, and historical institutions, as well as colleges and universities, to expand the YCBA's outreach and enrich the institution's programs.
The Head of Education supervises and mentors a staff of professional museum educators, an administrative assistant, and postgraduate fellows, as well as volunteers, interns, and Student Guides. They are responsible for department budgets and all department operations. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.
Leads the Education department and manages its activities, budget, and staff.Supervises and directs management of educational programs and initiatives, determining priorities for the department.Directs the conception, development, and implementation of projects that involve interpretive teaching. Disseminates interpretive strategies to diverse student and public audiences.Raises funds for programs and educational initiatives, including through donations and grants.Teaches and lectures in support of educational programs.Discusses the breadth and significance of the collection with other educational leaders. Recommends areas of interest related to the collection to be studied and used by educators, faculty, and students.Directs and initiates the educational discussion of objects in the collection and exhibitions at the museum with diverse audiences.Promotes knowledge of the collection through outreach, research, teaching, and writing.Represents the Education department on YCBA and university committees; represents the YCBA and the university to local, national, and international communities to promote the institution and its collection.Builds community, especially within the City of New Haven, through the department's educational programs and initiatives.Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.Required Education and Experience: MA in art history, education, museum education, or related field, and a minimum of ten years of professional experience in the field of museum education.
Required Skill/Ability 1: Excellent skills as a leader, manager, and administrator, as demonstrated by a record of progressive roles and responsibilities in a museum and/or teaching environment. Demonstrated expertise in museum education, school and youth programming, adult programs, and community engagement.
Required Skill/Ability 2: Proven ability to think strategically about museum education programs.
Required Skill/Ability 3: Proven ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with collaborators at the university, in the community, and in the field, as well as with diverse museum audiences. Ability to exercise excellent interpersonal skills and relate well to different groups inside and outside the museum and university. Eagerness to engage with the local community.
Required Skill/Ability 4: Excellent writing and public speaking skills. Excellent teaching skills, including at the university level.
Required Skill/Ability 5: Knowledge of art history in one or more of the YCBA's collection areas.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Significant experience in an art museum is preferred.
