Heads of Learning Area work closely with the Principal Team and other members of the Leadership Team.

The College Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan describes in detail the goals and priorities of the College and the work in which all staff are involved. Heads of Learning Area play a key role in ensuring that the following core issues are addressed comprehensively and systematically:
Caring for each student as an individual and ensuring that all make progress.Improving the quality of teaching and learning that occurs in every classroom in the College.Each Head of Learning Area is responsible for the leadership of a key learning area, within the guidelines set by the College, DET and the VCAA. As such they provide leadership, direction and support to the teaching staff in that area and ensure that the curriculum program is effectively implemented.
ResponsibilitiesKEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work as part of the senior leadership team to develop a clear vision for the College and provide strong leadership in the implementation of the vision.Provide effective and dynamic leadership of the team of teachers in the learning area with the aim of achieving continuous improvement in the quality of curriculum program design and delivery, in line with current educational pedagogy and the colleges Instructional Model.Oversee and manage the documentation of all courses of study and ensure they are consistent with DET, VCAA, Victorian Curriculum and School Council policy. In addition, ensure that the agreed curriculum is being effectively and consistently implemented by all teachers in the learning area.Lead and support the staff in the embedding of the GWSC Instructional Model into everyday teacher practice within their faculty.Ensure effective formative and summative assessment practices are implemented consistently and used to inform student learning progress.Appraise teachers within the learning area through the DET Statement of Expectation process and support them to reflect on, and continually improve, their teaching practice.Oversight of the PLTs within the learning area.Develop and implement a learning area professional development plan based on the college AIP which facilitates the active participation of all teachers in the learning area in on-going professional development, including opportunities for moderation and collaboration.Oversee the day-to-day organisation of the learning area, including ordering and management of appropriate resources, booklists, provision of work to cover absent teachers, and OHS needs for the faculty.Provide leadership for subject selection and course development within the learning area, and work closely with the sub schools to support the course selection process.Work closely with Assistant Principal and Timetabler to create a staffing profile that meets the needs of the learning area and college.Work closely with the Assistant Principal on issues pertaining to Human Resources, staffing and recruitment.Other duties as directed by the principal.Promote the Child Safe Standards.
