Queensland Pathways State College (QPSC) is a state high school dedicated to supporting young people aged 15 to 18 (minimum grade 10) who face significant challenges in mainstream education.

We are seeking a highly motivated Head of Department - Student Engagement (First Nations) to lead our initiatives across Mount Isa and the college.
This role is vital in creating a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed educational environment that enhances student participation and success while upholding our values of unity, belief, and respect.

The ideal candidate will develop strategies to specifically engage our First Nations students, collaborate with staff, provide targeted professional development, and foster strong relationships with families and community partners.

Job duration: A period of 12 months, unless otherwise determined.
QPSC delivers a 12-month senior transitions program designed for vulnerable students who are determined to complete their senior studies but have faced significant challenges, beyond their control, to attending mainstream schooling.
Many of our students are experiencing complexities such as anxiety, depression, homelessness, or trauma.
Through creating a safe and supportive environment, we inspire these students to achieve their goals and successfully transition to further learning (TAFE or university) or employment.
Our curriculum delivery has a strong focus on literacy, numeracy, workplace skills, and wellbeing.
Our students are able to achieve their QCE through a combination of QCAA and VET courses, and we assist students wishing to transition to tertiary studies through alternative, non-ATAR pathways.
Our enrolment numbers of First Nations students are increasing, and we are seeking to build our capacity to better connect and engage with all students across the school and build staff capacity to support engagement.

Your Role

As Head of Department - Student Engagement (First Nations), you will have responsibility for leading student support and engagement, specifically for our First Nations students, across the college and deliver on the following key tasks:
Provide leadership and guidance for the development of innovative, evidence-based strategies aimed at improving student learning outcomes and attendance, ensuring quality learning outcomes for First Nations students.Work closely with the senior leadership team to enhance the capacity of staff to meet the needs of our First Nations learners and promote culturally appropriate pedagogy.Develop, monitor, and review strategies to monitor and support the engagement and performance of our First Nations students.Your responsibilities will include:
Developing teaching programs that support equitable and ongoing participation of First Nations students by engaging in collaborative relationships with community representatives, parents, and carers.Reviewing current curriculum, pedagogy, and case management for First Nations students and provide advice using evidence-based strategies to further enhance their engagement.Reviewing the effectiveness of new initiatives for the senior leadership team.Providing information to the school community about First Nations social and cultural perspectives.Support the monitoring of First Nations students' individual performance and behaviour and develop and implement intervention strategies where necessary.Supporting the connection and engagement with external agencies (for example, indigenous support agencies) to support students and their families and incorporate the holistic needs of students including academic, social, and emotional.About You An ideal candidate will possess the following experience and knowledge:
Have a strong working knowledge of First Nations social and cultural perspectives.Demonstrated experience in effectively leading teams to deliver greater engagement and outcomes for students.Have strong knowledge of the senior phase of learning and delivering on the Equity and Excellence strategy.Have strong teaching and learning experience in working with First Nations students.First Nations applicants are encouraged to apply.
