The QCIF team includes more than 40 specialists with expertise across cloud, high-performance advanced computing; data science, data curation and optimisation; sensitive data handling and deployment of trusted research environments; bioinformatics; software development; statistics, modelling and simulation; IoT and systems integration, and applied AI and machine learning.
About the RoleAs the Principal Data Scientist (Applied AI), you will lead the design, implementation, and delivery of advanced AI and machine learning solutions across diverse research disciplines and industry sectors. You will be responsible for developing technical capabilities, guiding business strategy, and leading a high-performing team in a matrix environment. The role demands extensive experience in Python programming, cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Nectar Research Cloud), big data processing, and infrastructure development.
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership: Define and lead the long-term vision of the Applied AI team, contributing to the strategic direction of QCIF and integrating AI-driven opportunities across business units.Team Management and Mentorship: Mentor a multidisciplinary team of data scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.Resource Management: Manage the day-to-day allocation of resources and monitor and control the allocated budget.Project Oversight: Manage multiple projects, ensuring quality outcomes are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with organisational goals.AI Solutions Delivery: Design, develop, and deploy scalable AI, machine learning, and computer vision solutions to address complex computational problems across diverse domains such as environment, health, and agriculture.Infrastructure and Workflow Innovation: Develop and maintain scalable AI workflows, data pipelines, and real-time data processing systems to enhance QCIF's infrastructure.Training and Capacity Building: Lead the development and delivery of training workshops to upskill staff and external stakeholders.Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Interface with collaborators, clients, and stakeholders to manage expectations, communicate progress, and ensure satisfaction. Consult with researchers to understand their research questions and provide necessary support required to meet their research goals. Gather project requirements from researchers, developing with them new proposals and project plans.Representation and Outreach: Represent QCIF at industry and academic events, fostering alliances and promoting QCIF delivered technology uptake trials and co-innovation.Business Development: Identify and pursue partnerships, grants, and tenders to expand QCIF's impact in AI and data science.Dissemination of Findings: Where appropriate, report research results to the scientific community via reports, posters, papers, and presentations.Safety and Compliance: Ensure adherence to QCIF's health, safety, and operational policies while maintaining a safe and effective working environment.About You Qualifications and Experience (Selection Criteria) Formal qualifications in Data Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline with extensive experience and proven success in developing AI/ML solutions across divergent industry sectors/research disciplines;Proficiency and experience with conventional machine learning algorithms (e.g., regression, classification, clustering), approaches (e.g., supervised, unsupervised), deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras) and neural networks (e.g., convolutional, recurrent, graph and transformers);Strong experience developing solutions and tools in two or more of the following areas: Embedded AI and ML, Edge Computing, Data Mining, Information Retrieval, Pervasive Computing, Natural Language Processing, Generative AI, and Federated Activities (e.g., learning, analysis, query);Exceptional project management skills, adept at balancing competing priorities and delivering results within a matrix-style organisational structure;A track record of building successful partnerships and deriving success from team collaborations in a research and innovation environment;Evidence of sound communication and ability to disseminate complex technical concepts via workshops, training, and/or research outputs.Organisational RelationshipsThe position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and Director of Data Science and works in close collaboration with the Head of Data and Software Solutions and peer Principal Data Scientists.
LocationThe role will work from the QCIF offices at one of our Member universities. Flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
