Location ProfileLocated in Melbourne's Western suburbs, Sunshine Special Developmental School (SDS) offers a unique and innovative learning environment for students aged from 5-18 years with moderate to severe Intellectual Disabilities. Sunshine SDS is a P-12 school organized around a Primary and Secondary Learning Centre Model. The school is home to a wide range of students from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Our Vietnamese community is strong and we welcome an increasing number of Burmese and African families into our learning community.
Sunshine SDS has an enrolment of 200 students and a staff complement of: 4 Principal Class, 4 Leading Teachers, 2 Learning Specialists, 26.9 Teachers, and 53 Education Support Staff.
Our teaching and learning programs are tailored to meet the individual needs of students and include the use of the ABLES (Abilities Based Learning and Education Support). Learning is aligned to the Victorian Curriculum, with an emphasis on English, Communication, Mathematics, and Personal and Social Capability.
Selection Criteria - GraduatesSC1: Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the capacity to incorporate the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills.
SC2: Demonstrated capacity to implement high impact teaching strategies and evaluate the impact on student learning growth.
SC3: Demonstrated capacity to monitor and assess student learning and use data to inform teaching practice.
SC4: Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to establish collaborative relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
SC5: Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values.
SC6: Demonstrated commitment and experience in special education.
Program Benefits - GraduatesThis position may attract an incentive payment of $5,650 (pre-tax) for the successful candidate who meets the eligibility criteria. Role - GraduatesThe primary focus of the range 1 classroom teacher is on developing skills and competencies to become an effective classroom practitioner with structured support and guidance.
Responsibilities - GraduatesCore responsibilities include:
Planning and implementing a range of teaching programs or courses of study.Teaching an area of the curriculum or a general curriculum to a year level.Monitoring, evaluating, and reporting student progress in key learning areas.Implementing strategies to achieve targets related to student learning outcomes.Maintaining records of class attendance and recording student progress.Implementing effective student management consistent with the school charter.Who May Apply - GraduatesTo be eligible to apply, a teacher must:
Have completed their course requirements and graduated in the last 4 years.Not be employed as a teacher by the department at the time the advertised position is to commence.Applicants must also be currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
