The Land and Sea Management Unit delivers the Environmental Management Program. The key activity of the program is to protect the ecological complexity and biodiversity of the Torres Strait region, and the strong and enduring connection of Torres Strait Islander people to their islands and sea.
Key initiatives include:
• undertaking land and sea planning and operations.
• Working in partnership with Traditional Owners, and Registered Native Title and Prescribed Bodies Corporate to maintain Indigenous Protected Areas, traditional ecological knowledge, and undertake community planning and engagement through the Ranger project.
• Assisting the region to mitigate the impacts of climate change and encourage the use of renewable energy. The key duties of the position include: Duties and responsibilities in this role Acquiring, managing and making available data relating to natural resources and socio-economic demographics, including image files. Developing and maintaining systems (including both GIS and non-spatial databases) that record, analyse and interpret information relating to the condition and management of natural resources. Advising project management staff on GIS systems and capabilities including design of data collection systems. Providing in-house training to project management staff in GIS and Knowledge management. Maintain strategic linkages with relevant state-wide and external initiatives as well as other stakeholders, including the Regional Groups Collective and the e-Atlas. Strategic lead the LSMU MERI framework as well as the SOE report cards. Support Program Manager as required.
