Position Location: Burgmann Anglican School, Valley and Forde Campus
Line Management: This position is responsible in the first instance to the Deputy Principal (Student Engagement) and ultimately to the Principal.
Burgmann Anglican School is an Early Childhood to Year 12 School with campuses located at Gungahlin and Forde. The school prides itself on its innovative and creative approach to curriculum and education and its strong sense of community and pastoral care of the students and their families and the staff of the school. The school has a strong link with the Gungahlin Anglican Church which shares facilities and resources with the school.
Terms A Leadership Allowance (Level 2) will be paid, commensurate with the responsibility of the position. While there is no formal teaching allocation of time, it is expected that the incumbent would have a reasonable level of face-to-face time with students, with this to be negotiated with the Deputy Principal.
The seniority of the position necessitates that the incumbent may be required to be present on the campus before and beyond the regular timetabled day and sometimes during non-term time. This position also has an after-hours component.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Gifted and Talented Coordinator is responsible for ensuring best practice for the education of Gifted and Talented students, across the school. A member of the Inclusion team, with the key duty being to lead the gifted and talented program and provisions for students from K – 12. This includes ensuring the identification of gifted and talented students, the development, implementation and review of Personal Plans, development of teacher capacity and knowledge, and ensuring a rich offering to support individual student needs. They are a key liaison with parents and work closely with staff across the school as well as working directly with students at times.
Working Relationships The Gifted and Talented Coordinator is a member of the Inclusion team who reports directly to the Deputy Principal (Student Engagement). They work closely with the student care team, including the sub school leadership team, Leader of Inclusion, psychologists, Heads of House, and general teaching staff. They also work closely with the co-curricular team and Heads of School.
Position Responsibilities Ensuring and developing a rigorous co-curricular and competition program to enhance and extend learning:Lead the Ernest program, supporting the co-curricular team and staff to develop and provide diverse opportunities for students.Lead and facilitate the academic competition offerings for students across the school, including promoting, ensuring supervision, and celebrating successes.Seek to introduce signature programs for gifted and talented students that may include immersion days, camps, enrichment with other schools, and work with mentors.Leading the identification, planning, and provision for gifted and talented students:Supporting and developing the data collection processes to enable identification.Working with parents, internal and external professionals, and staff to ensure planning, programming, and provisions meet student needs, including in the development of Personal Plans.Collaborate with the Inclusion team to ensure complex needs are met, especially for twice exceptional students.Ensure ongoing monitoring for identified gifted students, providing recommendations to further their development and successes.Work with individual students including:Providing, developing, and facilitating opportunities for individual students and groups of students. This may include but is not limited to small groups, excursions, clubs, and regular enrichment lessons.Managing the process for student acceleration, where the student is being considered for acceleration of an entire year level, or in multiple subjects, or in a subject for more than two academic years, in collaboration with the Head of School.Leading the development of staff knowledge and capacity in best practice for gifted and talented students including:Being an expert and resource for staff, providing information about the most up-to-date developments in approaches and programs for gifted students, including advising on best practice.Develop school policies and practices.Provide professional learning for staff.Be a mentor, showcasing best practice, working alongside teachers in the classroom as well as sharing resources that can be used by teachers.Work across the school, in different curriculum areas, to ensure the development by staff of rich and diverse extension, enrichment, and acceleration opportunities.Work closely with classroom teachers to provide support for the differentiation of learning to support individual students.Any other duties as required that will enhance the wellbeing and learning outcomes of gifted and talented students.Selection Criteria Qualifications Relevant tertiary teaching qualification and completed study in Gifted Education or have experience in leading gifted education programs in a school.Registered teacher status.The successful applicant will: Have a deep understanding of the unique and at times complex needs of gifted and talented students, and experience in supporting gifted and talented students.Have knowledge of programs for gifted and talented students, and experience in researching and recommending new programs.Demonstrate effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, able to guide, mentor, and develop colleagues' practice.Have experience in using a range of learning data to guide best practice in learning and teaching.Have demonstrated skill and understanding in differentiating the curriculum to meet a wide range of learning needs.Have experience and expertise in working collaboratively with parents and other professionals to meet the needs of students.Collaborate effectively with teaching colleagues across the school.Contribute effectively to curriculum development across the school.Contribute to the wider life of the school through the co-curricular program.Have completed study in Gifted Education or have experience in leading gifted education programs in a school.Salary, Terms and Conditions The successful applicant will be employed under the Independent Schools ACT Standards Model (Teachers) Enterprise Agreement 2021.
