About us
Geoscience Australia is Australia's pre-eminent public sector geoscience organisation. We are the nation's trusted advisor on the geology and geography of Australia. We apply science and technology to describe and understand the Earth for the benefit of Australia. We apply our diverse professional expertise, our deep and trusted knowledge, our national-scale Earth observation infrastructure and our strong partnerships, to the opportunities and challenges that face our nation.
Geoscience Australia is leading the Australian Government's 35-year, $3.4 billion Resourcing Australia's Prosperity Initiative, mapping Australia's resources for a sustainable future. The initiative will use precompetitive data, geoscientific research and analysis to assess national potential for a broad suite of the resources critical to the net zero transition, supporting a strong resources and energy sector. It will map national groundwater systems, improve environmental management and approvals, and empower First Nations peoples and local communities.

Our team
This role is based within the Mineral Potential of Australia Section, part of the Mineral Systems Branch in the Minerals, Energy and Groundwater Division. The work of the Mineral Potential of Australia Section will be integral to the Resourcing Australia's Prospectivity initiative, a recently announced, multi-decadal investment in pre-competitive geoscience by the Commonwealth Government. Resourcing Australia's Prosperity will, over 35 years, at a national scale and through deep dives, progressively map Australia's highly prospective regions, critical minerals, groundwater and resources needed for the transition to net zero.
The role
The Geoscientist (Mineral Potential Mapping) will contribute their technical expertise in mineral systems, data integration, statistical analysis, and mineral potential mapping workflows, to deliver national mineral potential assessments for all critical minerals and strategic materials as part of Geoscience Australia's Resourcing Australia's Prosperity initiative.
This role is being offered at either APS6 or EL1 level depending on the skills and experience of the candidate.
In this role you will:
Work collaboratively within a team to deliver national-scale mineral potential assessments as part of the Resourcing Australia's Prosperity initiative. Provide mineral systems expertise to assist in understanding and predictively mapping controls on the formation of mineral systems containing critical minerals. Develop new interpretations and mappable spatial proxies of mineral system processes using multi-disciplinary data for input to mineral potential assessments. Contribute to innovative workflow development, feature engineering, and statistical analysis to support the delivery of new precompetitive geoscience. To be successful in the role you will:
Support the strategic direction of Geoscience Australia and the Australian Government's priorities on critical minerals. Have a passion for the role of geoscience in supporting the transition to net zero emissions, with a focus on Australian critical minerals and their importance to the wider community and whole of Government agenda. Provide mentoring and technical expertise to support building staff capability. Build and sustain long-term relationships and liaise with a range of stakeholders across government, industry, and academia. Proactively identify risks and issues around project delivery and provide solutions to mitigate them while maintaining effective performance. Be a team player who collaborates effectively, actively shares knowledge, is open to developing new skills, and takes personal responsibility for their work. Demonstrate a commitment to building a positive and inclusive workplace culture. Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical, and professional way. Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
Tertiary degree or equivalent experience in geoscience or related field. A firm understanding of the mineral systems concept and experience with a variety of mineral systems. Demonstrated understanding of predictive mineral potential mapping workflows. Practical experience with both data-driven and knowledge-driven mineral potential mapping techniques will be highly regarded. Experience in code development for spatial data analysis in Python, R, or other relevant programming language. Practical experience with advanced statistics and/or machine learning applied to the integration of multi-disciplinary geoscience datasets will be highly regarded. To Apply
