The General Manager, Observing Systems and Operations (OSO), has responsibility for the observation technology that enables the operations of the organisation and the OSO Program that supports this function, such as weather radars, automatic weather stations, and balloon launchers.
This role oversees OSO Operations, Engineering, Business Support and Transformation, Asset Management, and Observation Advice Units. It is responsible for over 300 staff geographically distributed across Australia and its territories.
This is an exciting leadership role, responsible for the strategic direction setting, management, and coordination of observational systems and services for the Bureau of Meteorology. The portfolio of responsibility embraces a complex composite observing network comprising diverse measurement platforms and technical infrastructure deployed nationally and aligned internationally.
The successful candidate will determine the strategic direction for the Bureau to maintain and expand its operational technology, embed asset management capability, systems engineering disciplines, and ISO standards.
Other responsibilities include providing informed advice and participation in Bureau Executive processes, responding to media and parliamentary requests, and participating in international forums such as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and international partner agencies.
The General Manager, Observing Systems and Operations will have excellent communication and engagement skills suited to internal and external outreach and collaboration with executive managers across the Bureau and within partner agencies. They will have detailed knowledge and experience working with operational technology, engineering capabilities, program management and delivery, and experience managing systems that deliver to customer needs and expectations.
