About the role The General Counsel will provide expert and strategic legal advice across the OIC to our privacy and right to information jurisdictions and corporate team. We are looking for an experienced lawyer with:Proven experience delivering timely, accurate, and strategic legal advice to senior executives and management.Expertise in legal analysis, including statutory interpretation and administrative decision-making principles.Experience in negotiating and exercising sound judgement in managing and resolving complex and sensitive issues.Extensive knowledge and experience in identifying and analysing intricate legal issues and risks within a regulatory or public sector integrity context.Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively to achieve desired outcomes.Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, with a client-focused approach.Demonstrated ability as an effective communicator with a track record of clear and concise written communication.This is a permanent, full-time (flexible) opportunity.Key responsibilitiesProvide timely, accurate and strategic legal advice to the Information Commissioner, Right to Information Commissioner, Privacy Commissioner, and the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) on the operation of the RTI Act, the IP Act, including recent amendments made under the Information Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2023 (IPOLA Act) and other related legislation.Provide timely, accurate and strategic legal advice to internal stakeholders on administrative law, regulatory and corporate matters including but not limited to, statutory interpretation, investigations, exercise of coercive powers, human rights, contract negotiation and procurement, insurance matters and industrial/employment matters.Provide legal advice to the ELT on organisational matters including responding to service delivery complaints, preparing, or settling briefings relating to law and legal policy, preparing proposals for legislative change and contributing to reports and publications.Support the Information Commissioner with strategic stakeholder engagement activities and in parliamentary and legal hearings as required, including in court and tribunal proceedings.Manage the provision of legal services outsourced to external providers, ensuring a quality service and value for money.Why join OICWork life balance - we truly embrace flexible work arrangements, including hybrid workA supportive, committed, and respectful work environmentPassionate, engaged and high performing organisationOpportunity to be part of significant change in QueenslandAbout OICOIC is a small independent statutory authority that plays an important role in Queensland's integrity framework. Our office reviews agency decisions about access to information, mediates privacy complaints, and monitors and reports on agency compliance to Parliament.
