The Role The Great Southern Mental Health Service is a well-established service. The adult psychiatry portion of the service is comprised of an authorised inpatient unit with a total of 16 beds, including 4 PICU beds, which is co-located with the Community Mental Health Clinic. The Adult Community Mental Health is comprised of the Acute Assessment & Treatment Team, and the longer-term Continuing Treatment Team. Each team has a psychiatrist, at least one registrar, resident medical officer, experienced nurses, Aboriginal mental health workers and a mix of allied health professionals. The team is responsible for caring for those who need specialist mental health care in the community and inpatient setting and provide necessary pharmacological, behavioural, and therapeutic interventions with an emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach.
The Hospital The Albany Health Campus has a well-established Mental Health Department. You will be working in a leading, innovative regional comprehensive mental health service (adult, older adult, youth, child and adolescent, inpatient/community, consultant liaison).
At AUD$170.4 million, Albany Health Campus' opening in 2013 marked the completion of the largest public country hospital development ever undertaken in Western Australia.
It offers enhanced services in modern facilities with superior care for patients and a better working environment for staff. Inpatient wards feature a mix of double and single rooms, all air conditioned. Negative pressure isolation rooms enable better infection prevention for contagious diseases.
Requirements Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABPN certified) or New Zealand.
The Medical Board of Australia is establishing a new expedited pathway to specialist registration, eliminating the need for a specialist assessment with a specialist medical college for those with an accepted qualification. The list of accepted qualifications will be published shortly, with the new pathway available from December 2024. The Location The Great Southern region, located south-east of Perth, covers an area of approximately 87,000 square kilometres and has a population of about 80,000 people. The regional centre is the historic port town of Albany, which has one of the best natural anchorages in the southern hemisphere.
