Job Description
Gazette is seeking a Managing Editor to work alongside the Editorial Director and play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of our newsroom.
This role is ideal for someone with an exceptional nose for news, operational precision, and a knack for managing reporters to consistently deliver impactful, high-quality content.
The Managing Editor will ensure our team is executing at a high level and that Gazette's journalism consistently resonates with our audiences.
The core responsibilities include:
Collaborate with the Editorial Director to divide and conquer daily editorial operations, including story assignments, deadlines, and quality control, sharing the workload to maintain efficiency and excellence.
Exercise news judgment, identifying the stories that resonate with local audiences, and finding ways to illuminate under-reported issues.
Work with and mentor reporters, focusing on skill-building to shape pitches, refine angles, and develop impactful stories across formats, including vertical video, explainers, and long-form features.
Help to identify key beats across our local mastheads to ensure we're telling the stories that matter most to our varying audiences.
Ensure all content meets Gazette's high standards for accuracy, fairness, and ethical journalism.
Push our reporters, and our team, to grow and strive towards our ambitious growth goals.
Ideal Candidate
Experience: 5+ years in newsroom roles, including editorial management experience.
Proven ability to oversee teams, workflows, and content strategy.
A deep bench of contacts on all sides of politics is a real plus.
News Judgment: Strong track record of identifying impactful stories and delivering journalism that connects with audiences, including via data journalism, FOI reporting, and reporting complex issues.
Technical Skills: Familiarity with digital tools, analytics platforms, content management systems, and social media strategy.
Collaboration: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to share responsibilities, inspire teams, and collaborate effectively with other functions.
Operations: Highly organized, detail-oriented, and adept at managing complex workflows in a fast-paced environment.
Passion: Deep commitment to public interest journalism, countering misinformation, and serving local communities.
Adaptability: Comfortable in a startup environment where priorities evolve and creative problem-solving and flexibility are key.
