The opportunity The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.
In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.
The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means 'sharing sky and stars' in the Wajarri language.
The SKA-Low FPGA Engineer position will contribute to the development and operation of the FPGA firmware of the SKA-Low telescope. In the current construction phase, the position will work with teams around the world to develop and operationalise this firmware. The construction project adheres to lean/agile principles, using an SKA-tailored version of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). This position will work within this framework as it evolves from construction to operations.
Your duties will include: Build, test, integrate, document, deploy and maintain FPGA firmware, in accordance with the SKA quality framework and continuous integration processes.
Participate in the activities of the Low Agile Release Train (Low ART) as a member of an international software team.
Communicate openly, effectively, and respectfully with all team members and collaborators in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of SKAO and CSIRO's reputation.
Location: Perth, Western Australia
Salary: AU$110,038 - AU$119,080 plus 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Indefinite - Full-Time, Part-Time or Job-Share
Reference: 97987 To be considered you will need: Essential Bachelor's degree or higher in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
Proficiency in FPGA firmware development, including analysis, design, coding, testing, simulation, debugging, optimization and maintenance.
Sound working knowledge of firmware development systems, workflows, methodologies and tools, such as VHDL, Vunit, design tools (e.g. Vivado), and simulation tools (e.g. Modelsim/Questasim).
Familiarity with digital signal processing concepts and techniques.
Experience with network interfaces and protocols in FPGA contexts.
Desirable Experience in developing firmware and embedded software for a range of platforms, including microprocessors and Linux.
Experience with high-speed SerDes implementation.
Familiarity with modern development practices, including version control, CI/CD, testing, documentation, and code quality aspects.
Experience working in a diverse and collaborative team environment across multiple locations in lean/agile teams.
