The Director of National Parks is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, and 58 Australian Marine Parks.
Parks Australia supports the Director and works to showcase these natural and cultural wonders to the world.
The Job : This is a permanent ongoing position that will require working on a 10 / 4 roster for part of the year. Under general supervision and at the direction of the Manager, Country, you will implement biodiversity and cultural-focused fire management programs across Kakadu National Park (KNP).
Key Responsibilities :
Manage all aspects of KNP Fire Management planning, implementation, and review. Consult and engage with Traditional Owners and other stakeholders regarding fire management. Coordinate and lead strategic prescribed burning programs. Implement existing policies and best practice guidelines for sustainable fire management. Assist in the finalisation of the KNP Fire Management Strategy. Supervise and mentor Kakadu Fire Team. Manage risk and WHS related to fire management in KNP. Develop and deliver fire-related training for park staff and traditional owners. Liaise with researchers to address knowledge gaps in fire management. Manage Savanna Burning carbon projects within KNP. Maintain data and GPS records related to fire management activities. Manage the KNP Fire Monitoring and Evaluation framework. Promote safe working practices as per WHS regulations. Encourage Aboriginal traditional owners' participation in fire management. Mentor and support field staff and traditional owners in fire management practices. Perform all duties in accordance with relevant Acts and Management Plans. What We Are Looking For :
Knowledge and Experience :
Experience managing landscape-scale fire management programs in Northern Australia. Experience in Savanna Burning Projects. Data Management and GIS skills. Practical knowledge and skills in planning and implementing fire management. Skills and Capabilities :
Awareness of issues affecting Indigenous people in remote locations. Effective team member with mentoring and training experience. Strong verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills. Ability to produce clear scientific and cross-cultural reports. Application of safe working practices in fire management. Mandatory Qualifications :
Conservation Land Management or similar degree or diploma.
The Successful Applicant Must :
Hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain it. Hold and maintain a current manual driver's licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle. Meet physical fitness standards for the role, including firefighting. Be prepared for outdoor and office-based work. Be available for occasional out-of-hours and weekend work. Be willing to travel to remote locations using various transport methods. Be prepared to work in difficult, remote, and harsh environments. Wear uniform and appropriate clothing. J-18808-Ljbffr
