The Victoria Police Forensic Services Department is an accredited laboratory that provides a professional forensic service to Victoria Police, persons involved with the administration of justice and the public.
About the role:The primary functions of the FSG is the recovery and identification of fingerprint evidence from casework and the maintenance and administration of known fingerprint samples in accordance with Section 464 of the Victorian Crimes Fingerprint Act 1958. Evidence from crime scenes and samples from unknown persons are examined to recover and identify fingerprint evidence and link persons of interest to casework.The FSG provides a range of services which include:Crime scene and exhibit examinationsProcessing latent impressions from crime scenesProcessing and management of 10 print fingerprint formsForensic intelligence and support to frontline membersProviding evidence in Courts of LawAs the successful applicant, some of your duties will include:Independently perform professional fingerprint work at an advanced level, including undertaking non routine casework assignments and defining the appropriate methodology in the examination of casework.Exercise a high level of independent judgement and skill which impacts on the Division, law enforcement and the courts.Examine crime scenes for development and recovery of latent fingerprints and attend disaster scenes/mortuary to fingerprint unidentified deceased persons.Prepare and present expert evidence in courts of law.Operate the National Automated Fingerprint Information System (NAFIS) and other office and laboratory equipment as required.Classify, search, identify and file fingerprint sets and latent fingerprints.Assist in the development of policy and the identification, development and implementation of new or improved procedures and protocols.Convey specialist concepts and knowledge to a wide range of clients, staff and stakeholders including participating on Victoria Police committees and groups.Undertake technical and administrative reviews of casework.Supervise, mentor and coach less experienced colleagues in line with professional development programs.Supervise and/or engage in innovation and research projects.Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of fingerprint techniques, methods and procedures.Take ownership of portfolio activities as required to support the day-to-day operations of the FSG.Skills & ExperienceAs the successful applicant, you will have: A significant track record of forensic scientific/technical achievement, with a proven commitment to quality in casework and/or research where appropriate.Demonstrated ability to provide expert advice to scientific/technical and non-scientific personnel at all levels including providing opinion evidence in court.Ability to manage and prioritise casework and meet deadlines within defined/agreed outputs/targets and/or to co-ordinate a team and meet team objectives.Diverse and specialist subject knowledge with an emphasis on forensic science and a proven ability to work autonomously and interpret examinations.Ability to conduct scene examinations where little or no supervisory advice is available.Demonstrated conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills.Proven ability to monitor client and stakeholder satisfaction, and constructively manage stakeholder issues to ensure positive outcomes for the stakeholder and the Region/Department/Command.A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to professional integrity.Requirements and relevant information:Position is located at 31 Forensic Drive Macleod, Victoria.Potential for relocation and sign on entitlements to be negotiated.The successful candidate will be required to:Provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).Show evidence of authorisation as a Fingerprint Expert within their jurisdiction.Show evidence of prior completion of the relevant discipline specific graduate certificate.Obtain certification from the Australasian Forensic Science Assessment Body (AFSAB) in the fingerprint discipline within 12 months.Undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.Work after hours, weekends and public holidays (shift work).How to applyYour application must include: Resume,Completed application form - attached to the job advertisement.
