Who we are The Office of the Supervising Scientist is a specialist scientific area within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Commonwealth). We are responsible for protecting the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct environmental research and monitoring around operating and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process, and develop standards and practices for environmental protection. Our multidisciplinary research institute (the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist) undertakes world-leading research for monitoring and assessing the environmental impacts of uranium mining across the following areas:
Environmental radioactivity
Ecosystem restoration and landform
Water and sediment quality
Drone operations and technology solutions
Our Water and Sediment Quality team operates numerous field-based research projects and a biological monitoring program encompassing multiple indicator groups, using established and developing technologies, to ensure protection of the aquatic ecosystems of the Alligator Rivers Region from the operation of uranium mines in the region.The Job In this role you will be responsible for:
Co-ordinating the activities of the Water and Sediment Quality team field work and the annual biomonitoring program. This will include responsibility for:
Co-ordination of all field work and provision of logistical support
Provision and maintenance of the required facilities and equipment
Maintaining and updating field-based Standard Operating Procedures and other field-based WHS requirements
Data governance of new and long-term field-based datasets
Providing advice on permits and co-ordinating permitting requirements
Coordinating and contributing to drafting and completion of annual corporate and animal ethics reporting
Regular assessment of the quality and effectiveness of WHS procedures for the biomonitoring and research field work
Leading and contributing to the conceptualisation, implementation and management (including budgets and timelines) of field-based research projects, and to ongoing review of the biomonitoring program
Assisting with the processing, analysis and interpretation of field datasets
Assisting with the preparation of reports and journal publications, and presenting research outcomes to external fora
Training and managing technical and professional staff in the methods for acquiring, analysing and interpreting biological data
What we are looking for Knowledge and experience
Demonstrated experience in managing a biological monitoring program or leading field-based activities, preferably in remote environments
Demonstrated experience in collecting and identifying key taxonomic bioindicator groups
Demonstrated experience in managing and curating field-based datasets for quality assurance
Demonstrated experience in analysing data, using univariate and multivariate techniques, and reporting and publishing findings of field projects
Demonstrated experience in managing staff and training personnel in field sampling and data analysis methods for biological monitoring
Skills and capabilities
High-level of communication in various forms for different audiences, such as technical and scientific reports or papers, oral presentations at conferences and social media for the public
An ability to operate all-terrain vehicles, 4WD vehicles and small boats or a willingness to do so with appropriate training
An ability to work harmoniously in a small team, and undertake field work in remote locations for extended periods (up to two weeks)
Eligibility Mandatory qualifications
A bachelor's degree in environmental or life science, or equivalent experience
Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen. Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
