Your Opportunity

The Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) Practitioner is responsible for providing information, support, counselling and mediation for separating couples and their children and assisting families to focus on the best interests of the children and young people.

Department Overview

Centacare North Queensland's Client Services Department provides a broad range of services across the North Queensland Region, such as Disabilities, Education and Life Skills, Family and Relationship Counselling, Employee Assistance Services, Gambling Help Services, Family Relationship Centre, Bridge/ROSA Programs, Family Intervention Services and Financial Resilience Counselling. As part of this department, the Family Relationship Centre provides information and support around relationships and family enhancements as well as family dispute resolution for families who want to discuss parenting arrangements. Our dispute resolution service provides information, support, counselling, and mediation for individuals, couples and children experiencing difficulties or seeking to make decisions regarding separation or divorce.

The purpose of this position is to provide support to parents and children by facilitating negotiations in family dispute resolutions, offering early intervention and prevention, community education and support services in line with program guidelines. Assisting families to focus on the best interests of the children and young people.

Key Responsibilities

Undertake client intake, risk and needs assessments and ensure recommendations and related practices comply with the Family Law Act 1975 (the Act) and the Family Law (Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners) Regulations 2008 (the FDRP Regulations) and other legislative requirements. Undertake family dispute resolution and case management with couples, families and individuals. Apply knowledge of relevant theoretical models and frameworks (FDR, conflict resolution, child development and child inclusive mediation) to ensure FDR practice appropriate to client needs. Conduct assessments of clients and make appropriate referrals as necessary. Maintain appropriate files, records and complete other required documentation within the agency guidelines. Ensure compliance with ongoing mediation practice standards and professional development requirements to maintain FDR Accreditation. Represent and promote Centacare in the wider community by engaging in and developing strong networks and partnerships. Actively participate in the process of professional supervision and identifying and undertaking professional development opportunities. Contribute to a positive, collaborative and values driven team environment that embraces a culture of 'best practice' and innovation.

To ensure job flexibility the role may be required to perform any other duties as nominated by Centacare North Queensland consistent with the classification descriptors detailed in the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010.

Skills and Experiences: To be successful in the role you will have: Tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Law, or Family Dispute Resolution / Mediation. Accreditation as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner or currently eligible to obtain registration under the accreditation standards set out in the FDRP Regulations. Experience in family dispute resolution and child-focussed practices and the ability to articulate the family dispute resolution process. Understand the obligations of FDR Practitioners under the Act and the FDRP Regulations. Ability to uphold reasonable professional standards in the provision of FDR services at all times. Demonstrated ability to apply highly developed communication skills both written and verbal. Current open drivers licence. Current, and ability to retain, both a Working with Children Blue Card check and Disability Worker Screening/Clearance/Card.

Desirable Demonstrated experience in intake, assessment, referral and case management. Relevant experience in the Not-For-Profit and/or Faith-Based Community Services sectors. An ability to understand and describe family functioning in a broad range of cultural and social contexts and the impact of separation and dysfunction within families. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate personal and relationship education.
