We are the only victim-based Aboriginal legal service in remote communities in the Top End region of the NT. We have offices in Darwin (Larrakia land), Katherine (Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman land) and Nhulunbuy (Yol?u land), and service over 40 remote communities within the Top End region spanning from the Tiwi Islands down to Lajamanu, Wadeye across to Borroloola. We provide culturally sensitive legal advice, assistance, representation, and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Top End communities who have experienced domestic, family, and sexual violence. We offer a holistic and culturally appropriate model of service which sets us apart; seeking practical community-based solutions to the most complex legal problems. Our primary practice areas are family law, child protection, and domestic violence; though we frequently intervene in coronial inquiries, parliamentary inquiries, and other administrative or criminal proceedings as required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Manage, facilitate and undertake a wide range of policy, research and advocacy activities.Promote approaches to policy, research and advocacy which involve NAAFLS clients, communities, staff, supporters and Board.Ground policy, research and advocacy in NAAFLS approaches to service provision especially client and community empowerment and help facilitate education in these approaches.Promote NAAFLS utilisation and leveraging of relationships, networks, and opportunities for positive policy, research and advocacy impacts.Keep abreast of legislative, regulatory, and public-interest developments, reporting to relevant stakeholders, and incorporating feedback into organisational strategies.Participate in National Family Violence Legal Services (NFVPLS) forum meetings and events to ensure NAAFLS is represented at all levels.Represent NAAFLS in relevant working groups, networks, consultative processes and events as appropriate.Promote reflection and learning from policy, research and advocacy activities.Manage special projects and initiatives directed by the PLO and CEO.Mentor and train NAAFLS staff to contribute in relation to all of the above and participate in relevant organisational working groups.Promote and maintain safe work practices in accordance with NAAFLS WH&S Policies and Procedures.Other duties as directed by the Principal Legal Officer or CEO.DUTIES Manage, facilitate and undertake a wide range of policy, research and advocacy activities to help advance:NAAFLS objectives as a striving Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation.Deep listening among stakeholders regarding the perspectives of NAAFLS clients and communities.Rights, wellbeing and true justice for NAAFLS clients and communities.Efforts to these ends by NAAFLS clients, communities, staff, supporters and Board.Promote approaches to policy, research and advocacy which involve NAAFLS clients, communities, staff, supporters and Board.Manage special projects and initiatives ensuring timely completion and alignment with organisational objectives.Proactively review the quality of various written materials, including briefs, policy documents, reports and presentations to ensure they align with relevant legislation, legal requirements and NAAFLS internal policies.Organise and maintain records of stakeholder and government communications.Actively participate in National Family Violence Legal Services (NFVPLS) forum meetings and events.Participate and develop utilisation and leveraging of relationships, networks, and opportunities for positive policy, research and advocacy impacts on behalf of the organisation.Mentor and train NAAFLS staff to contribute in relation to all of the above.Adhere to NAAFLS policies and procedures.Build a positive culture within the service which is aligned with NAAFLS' values and Strategic Plan.Participate in all staff and team meetings as required.Undertake interstate travel from time to time.Undertake training/professional development in consultation with the PLO.Undertake other duties as reasonably directed.SELECTION CRITERIA Possess demonstrated awareness of systemic issues facing Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory.Ability to work in empowering and collaborative ways as a staff member within an ACCHO and with clients, communities, and other stakeholders.Possess substantial experience in providing accessible and culturally sensitive legal assistance to Aboriginal survivors of family and domestic violence and sexual assault, especially those living in remote communities.Proven ability to assess policy matters and law reform and other relevant reform issues and develop well-considered and evidence-based responses.Demonstrate the ability to collaboratively identify systemic legal issues and work in a team to formulate programs to address systemic issues.Possess a high level of attention to detail and demonstrated ability to work with an electronic records management system and enter accurate and timely data and use a range of computer programs.Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of confidentiality, mandatory reporting and the issues relating to family violence.Must obtain a Working With Children Clearance (WWCC) and a clear Criminal History Check.Possess a current 'C' Class NT Drivers Licence.Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.
