Who we areThe International Environment, Reef and Oceans Division leads and influences Australia's engagement on a range of environment-related international agreements and treaties including those relating to oceans, wildlife trade and migratory species and oversees a range of Pacific environment programs.
The division contributes to the protection and sustainable management Australia's wildlife, oceans, marine and migratory species and the Great Barrier Reef.
The division comprises the International Environment Branch, Great Barrier Reef Branch and Oceans and Wildlife Branch.The Great Barrier Reef Branch leads the development of policy and manages programs for the sustainable management and enhancement of the Great Barrier Reef, including through the Reef 2050 Plan and Reef Trust.
The Branch engages with stakeholders and collaborates with partners to design and implement best practice programs and initiatives that deliver the government's outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef, including addressing poor water quality, the impacts of fishing on protected species and improving the resilience of Reef ecosystems.
The Branch works closely with scientists and regulators to deliver programs and to support the operation and management of sustainable and trusted fisheries.
The Branch works to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interests are supported through partnerships that deliver practical and enduring outcomes for First Nations people, as the custodians of the Reef and its catchment.
