No Offer Description Fixed Term, Full time position available until September 2026 The School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) at the University of Adelaide invites applications for a highly motivated and skilled researcher to join our project funded by the Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT-CRC). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in developing low-carbon technologies for iron/steel, alumina, and cement industries and collaborate with leading academic experts and industry partners.
This project aims to study the physical and chemical properties of Australian ores under high-flux laser heating to support the development and upscaling of new processing technologies for Net-zero emissions. The primary responsibilities of the research fellow include designing and commissioning a small heating rig, conducting experiments using advanced optical diagnostic techniques, performing materials analysis, and preparing research outcome reports. This position offers the opportunity to engage in impactful projects and develop professionally within a collaborative environment.

Salary: Level A, $78,544 - $105,611 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.
To be successful at Level A you will need: A completed or nearly completed PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated research experience in thermal engineering or metallurgy. Demonstrated research experience in studying thermo-fluids using advanced analysis tools, e.g., optical methods. Demonstrated ability in designing and commissioning lab-scale flow rigs. Good track record of publications in high-quality journals. Good written and oral communication skills in the related fields. Excellent teamwork suitable for a research group and for working with external research and industrial partners. Salary: Level B, $111,031 - $131,335 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies.
To be successful at Level B you will need: An earned doctoral qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated research experience in thermo-fluids or metallurgy (alumina refining and/or ironmaking). Demonstrated expertise in thermo-fluid experiments using advanced analysis tools, including optical/laser-based methods. Demonstrated experience of using modern material characterisation methodologies, such as TGA, SEM/TEM, and XPS. Demonstrated ability in designing and commissioning lab-scale high-temperature or reacting flow rigs, including the associated control systems. Strong track record of publications in high-quality journals. Excellent written and oral communication skills in the related fields. Excellent teamwork suitable for a research group and for working with external research and industrial partners. Strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to perform independent research, project management, and mentoring students.
