Work with Associate Professor David Pontin and Dr Hannah Schunker to model the processes on the Sun that drive Space Weather. Be challenged and imagine with us: You will use theory, data analysis, and computation to improve our ability to model the dynamical evolution of solar active regions, which are responsible for solar activity including solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This project involves developing a predictive capability for the evolution of the Sun's surface magnetic field, using physical models, machine learning, and observational data.
In this role you will: Analyse solar data, develop numerical models for coronal magnetic fields, and apply and test the modelsCollaborate closely with members of the research team and external researchers, and assist students in research projectsUndertake domestic and international travel to meet the goals of the projectPublish results in high-impact journalsCommunicate results at local and international meetings.Essential Criteria: a PhD in solar physics, (space) plasma physics, astrophysics, weather/climate modelling, applied mathematics or similar subjectexcellent computational skills, including the ability to work with codes for large-scale, parallel computation, as well as codes in Python or other languages for data analysisdemonstrated skills in data analysis, computational modelling using data, and the visualisation and interpretation of data and modelsdemonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, as well as to work effectively as a member of a teamexcellent communication (written and verbal), as well as organisational and problem-solving skills with attention to detailexperience in handling astrophysical datasetsa history of publication in peer-reviewed journalsexperience in research record-keeping and preparation of research papers and seminars.What we offer: This fixed-term position is full time until the end of December 2025, with the possibility of extension, and will be located at the Callaghan Campus (Awabakal and Worimi land). The remuneration range is from $78,905 – $107,080 plus 17% superannuation and leave loading.
