The Equine Veterinary Nurse at the University of Melbourne's Werribee Campus plays a key role in supporting equine clinical and research activities, focusing on high-quality lameness and imaging services, patient care, and efficient nursing assistance for veterinarians and researchers.
Working closely with imaging technicians, this role involves horse handling, diagnostic imaging procedures, and strict adherence to safety protocols, including radiation and infection control. Additionally, the Equine Veterinary Nurse will manage stock requirements and uphold best practice standards in infection control within the Equine Centre, contributing to a well-coordinated and safe clinical environment.
Your responsibilities will include: Provide veterinary nursing support and horse handling to assist in the delivery of high-level lameness and imaging services, patient care, and efficient nursing assistance to veterinarians and researchers in a timely manner in accordance with best practice.Assist with imaging activities under the direction of imaging technicians and veterinarians within the Equine Centre in accordance with radiation and operational safety protocols.Ensure efficient veterinary nursing service at all times and ensure timely maintenance of stock requirements, functional equipment, and adherence to best practice standards of infection control.Assist the imaging technicians in monitoring all personnel and animals entering the imaging suites to ensure their safety and adherence to safety protocols at all times.Assist and maintain imaging suites ensuring the areas are organised and clean in accordance with infection control requirements.Assist with patient clinical procedures in a timely manner under the direction of veterinarians and senior staff in accordance with relevant policies, procedures, and SOPs.Record and maintain all documentation, patient records, and animal ethics records in accordance with best practice, University policies, procedures, and SOPs.Involvement with student teaching as the vet students come through the lameness centre on the clinical rotations.Who We Are Looking For
You will demonstrate a genuine passion for horses, experience handling horses, and exhibit professionalism, enthusiasm, initiative, and a proactive attitude toward learning new skills and tasks.
You will also have:
Completion of a relevant Certificate III, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training.Proven veterinary nursing experience and animal handling skills in a veterinary clinical environment, particularly with equine patients.Completion of a Veterinary Nursing diploma and/or a radiation licence working in veterinary diagnostic imaging is highly desirable.This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
