Lawyer and Senior Lawyer 6 Month Opportunity
What you will do:The successful applicant(s) will provide practical advice on a diverse range of topics, including administrative law, contract law, intellectual property law, and privacy law, as well as FOI requests for the office. They will prepare and review legal policy submissions on complex and often novel issues and provide training to eSafety staff as needed. Those supporting eSafety's Investigations Branch will focus closely on supporting eSafety's Investigations Branch and providing practical advice on the use of eSafety's functions and powers under the four complaints-based schemes under the Online Safety Act. Those focusing on eSafety's Industry Codes and Standards and the Basic Online Safety Expectations will work closely with sections of eSafety's Industry, Compliance and Enforcement Branch responsible for implementing these schemes.
The skills & capabilities you need to perform the role:Our ideal candidate(s) will have an understanding of any of: administrative law, merits review, contract law, privacy and FOI law, intellectual property law, transparency, statutory interpretation, co-regulation and/or enforcement, evidence, criminal law, and codes/standards. They will possess the ability to navigate and advise on new and emerging legal issues in the online safety space, grounded in an awareness of existing and emerging online safety issues and the technology industry from a legal perspective.

You will have an opportunity to work closely with an extremely dedicated team, contributing to the delivery of legal advice across the organisation in novel areas of law in a highly contested space.
About the team:The Office of the eSafety Commissioner (eSafety) aims to help safeguard Australians at risk from online harms and promote safer online experiences. eSafety is committed to addressing a range of online harms, including cyberbullying, image-based abuse, online child sexual abuse material, and content depicting terrorist and extremist violence. The Legal Services Branch provides support and advice to the Investigations Branch, primarily in the administration of four complaint-based schemes: a) assist children who experience serious cyberbullying, b) assist adults who experience cyber abuse, c) support victims of image-based abuse, and d) respond to complaints or investigate online content.
Note:Current ongoing APS employees are eligible to apply for this vacancy by Expression of Interest. There is a possibility that this vacancy may be extended, or the position may become ongoing as an at-level transfer.
