Ashland has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Specialist to join our Ashland, Inc., ISP Technologies, Inc. business at our Texas City, Texas plant. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the manufacturing function. This position will report to the environmental, process safety, and security manager.
Responsibilities
Leads plant waste programs and handles efforts to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and company requirements.
Leads plant wastewater and stormwater programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and company requirements.
Leads plant environmental permitting processes related to waste, wastewater, and stormwater to ensure compliance with applicable permit conditions and maintain required permits.
Leads plant Underground Injection Control (UIC or Deepwell) program to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and company requirements.
Assists Corporate Remediation Group with implementing the site remediation program.
Leads or directs investigations related to actual or potential compliance violations. Uses root cause analysis methodology when appropriate.
Directs collection and analysis of environmental samples, interprets findings, and develops recommendations and corrective actions based on results.
Provides environmental regulatory training to personnel as necessary.
Assists with plant maintenance, startup, and shutdown permit compliance.
Assists other departments with activities and projects to ensure compliance and to further environmental compliance goals.
Works with Environmental Manager and other department representatives to establish and work toward achieving annual plant goals.
Keeps Environmental Manager informed on plant environmental, regulatory and compliance issues and stays knowledgeable on regulatory and industry practices.
Manages submittal of various reports required by regulatory agencies (DMRs, UIC Reports, Annual Waste Summary, etc.).
Participates in internal and external environmental and management system audits and regulatory inspections.
Develops and implements analysis of environmental related performance metrics, including analysis of internal, corporate, and industry benchmark data. Uses data for incident prevention and for communication of trends to site management.
Communicates verbally and in writing with local, state, and federal agencies concerning plant environmental matters.
Represents the plant on industry environmental committees and environmental professional associations.
Supervises daily/weekly/monthly recordkeeping related to waste, wastewater, stormwater, and UIC.
Assists in coordination of EHS Management System (RC 14001) initiatives.
Supervises environmental technician.
Develops and participates in other environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing company programs.
Assists Air Environmental Engineer as needed with permitting and compliance activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, or related field with minimum three years equivalent experience in a chemical plant environment.
Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations and environmental permitting procedures.
Able to interact effectively with individuals from the manufacturing site, corporate, regulatory agencies, vendors, and the community.
Able to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of the company, develop and foster a positive work environment, and resolve conflicts through problem resolution skills.
Able to respond appropriately during site emergencies, and as directed by the Site Emergency Manager.
Able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment when required to work and visit within the manufacturing process area.
Possess ability to walk, climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, including routine lifting of equipment of up to 25 lbs.
Valid Driver's License (if driving vehicles on Company business).
Always demonstrate responsible and ethical behavior.
Must be authorized to work in the US.
