Job Title: Environmental Engagement Specialist Specific/Mandatory Duties: Develops lesson plans, preps, and teaches all assigned environmental engagement programs at FRWC, including discovery, learning, and messaging with a focus on learning programs.Provides unique, interactive, and environmental engagement experiences for program participants and visitors.Ensures participants' safety through practicing professional classroom, camp, tour, informal programming, and nature exploration management; enforcing all policies; maintaining order at all times.Works as A Closer Look at the Overlook interpreter on a regular basis.Assists with Ectotherm Collection husbandry on a regular basis.Assists with the coordination and supervision of volunteers, interns, and seasonal/part-time staff.Assists with the training of staff, volunteers, and interns on assigned programming.Oversees the care and use of all assigned programming equipment/supplies/facilities, especially ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of the Activity Center and cabins.Utilizes the Point of Sales System accurately and follows all procedures for sales transactions.Works cooperatively with other FRWC departments.Adjusts work schedule as needed to accommodate any programming times that are outside the typical assigned work schedule.Provides excellent customer service to visitors, program participants, and FRWC staff/volunteers.Develops and maintains professional relationships with personnel from outside organizations and facilities.Stays current with information and skills pertaining to education, the environment, animals, and any other field pertinent to this position.Assists with events, promotional activities, etc.
as needed.Helps to ensure that the Environmental Engagement Department functions smoothly and productively; tasks include, but are not limited to, preparing, organizing, cleaning, and maintaining equipment, facilities, and supplies.Required Experience, Capacity, and Skills: Bachelor's degree in education, biology, zoology, environmental science, or a related field from college or university required.One to three years related experience working in an interpretive education setting.Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.Familiarity with a variety of teaching methods and knowledge of age-appropriate cognitive and physical abilities.Experience in interpretive education, including program development and implementation.Working knowledge of wildlife, conservation, and principles of education.Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Ability to work with both adult and teen volunteers, as well as interns.Experience in public speaking and creative thinking.Familiar with word processing programs, databases, and internet search engines.Capable of self-motivating and working without direct supervision.Desired Capability and Skills: Displays original thinking and creativity.Meets challenges with resourcefulness and adaptability.Generates suggestions for improving work.Develops innovative approaches and ideas.Relates to a variety of ages, personalities, and backgrounds.Presents a constructive, positive, and can-do attitude.Displays a sense of humor.Work Requirements: Usually a 5-day work week that includes at least one weekend day, often requiring flexibility and ability to work evening and holidays.
Irregular scheduling in which days may exceed 8 hours and overnight duties are required.
Ability to work in unpredictable and sometimes inclement outdoor conditions and in rugged terrain.
