What you'd be doing in this role As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA. This role is focused on:
Leading a small (3 to 5) team of engineers focused on building and extending the various systems that assemble and deliver web page bootstraps. Accountable for team delivery and ongoing delivery improvements. Partnering with Product to shape the roadmap, balancing product outcomes with pragmatic technical excellence. Being a hands-on leader contributing directly to progressing goals with code. Partnering with a broad set of stakeholders to ensure the platform you are building is fit for the needs of Canva as it continues to grow and evolve. Setting technical direction by researching, justifying and advocating design choices in the form of design docs. You're probably a match if You have experience in a technical leadership role; and in a people management or team leadership position. You've got experience building and monitoring systems in distributed cloud environments (ideally AWS). A systems thinker, at home scaling a Java back end service as well as analyzing Javascript payload sizes in the browser. You have deep knowledge and understanding of Computer Engineering fundamentals and first principles as they apply to the modern web. Hands-on experience in both the front end (Javascript) and backend (ideally Java) domains. Experience with templating languages is well regarded. You have the ability to guide and mentor other team members and improve collaboration, learning, and idea-sharing. You possess excellent communication and collaboration skills to coordinate efforts across teams in a dynamic environment. About the Team The Page Assembly team is responsible for developing, maintaining and evolving the systems for building and distributing web pages to millions of users. The technologies we use include Node, Soy, and Java. With a company like Canva, there are engaging engineering challenges to help uplift page serving capabilities and prepare Canva for 1 Billion monthly active users.
About the Role This role sits within the newly formed Page Assembly team. As the Engineering Manager, you will provide a balance of people, technical, and delivery leadership. You will ensure that the team has a high-impact technical roadmap and delivers on its goals efficiently while fostering a safe and inclusive environment for experimentation, learning, and growth. Your work will be vital in keeping the Canva product highly available, secure, and performant.
