This is an opportunity to join the engineering leadership team at Betashares Direct and be responsible for the Core Platform strategy, team, and technology. You will be empowered to make technology decisions, manage budgets, and build and manage a team that will be the envy of the financial services industry.
This role will suit someone that wants to lead from the front, uplift those around them and be accountable for the growth of both the team and Betashares Direct. You will work closely with other business units within the company to ensure that technology is aligned to the business objectives.
This will be a dynamic role with an expectation to be hands-on with engineering as well as managing people - we expect you to be able to lead from the front and jump into the code with your team. Management of both on-shore and off-shore, strategy, new technology feasibility, security, third party integrations, and budget control will also be part of the role.
Role ResponsibilitiesCo-leading engineering at Betashares Direct, with a specific focus on owning and delivering the core platform strategy and managing the core platform team.Become a member of Betashares Direct senior leadership team.Proactively and jointly guide the technology direction and strategy for Betashares Direct as well as the integration of Direct with Betashares Super and other product initiatives.Overall joint responsibility for engineering and technology team structure, development, growth and capacity both on and offshore.Build, lead, and mentor a high-performance engineering and technology team.Work closely with other business divisions (e.g. Product & Design, Super, Support, Operations, Management) to align technology with business objectives.Develop a technology capacity to unlock a high-cadence, albeit risk aware, feature and product development function.Ensure that Betashares technology stack is scalable, secure and able to handle exponential growth.Ensure that the applications built are secure and protect customer information.Ownership of core platform technology decisions, including staying abreast of emerging and best practice technologies to maintain a competitive advantage.Review existing technology, engineering processes and team structure and recommend and execute on changes/improvements as required.Co-manage the technology budget, ensuring efficient and cost effective use of resources.Assist and execute inorganic growth strategies, including technology due diligence, security audits, integration planning and roadmap integration, team integration and risk management.Communicate technology strategies and progress to internal and external stakeholders.Help to build Betashares' reputation as a technology leader externally, as well as a great reputation for creating financial products with great customer experiences.Assist the team in creating new & innovative products, and embolden an innovative culture with the team.Assist with inorganic growth pre and post transaction. Skills & ExperienceProven track record of building, releasing, and supporting complex, performant, back-end service applications in production.8+ years hands-on experience developing backend services and infrastructure.Experience architecting applications in cloud-based environments (AWS, GCP or Azure).Exposure to architecture patterns such as event driven and microservices.Exposure to Golang or Rust is beneficial.Exposure to container orchestration services such as Kubernetes or AWS Fargate is highly desirable.Exposure to accounting/financial services is beneficial.CI/CD Expertise: Experience with modern CI/CD pipelines and practices to enable high-cadence deployments.Monitoring and Observability: Proficiency in tools like Prometheus, Grafana, DataDog, or similar for system performance and health monitoring.Data Engineering Experience: Familiarity with data pipelines, ETL processes, and working with tools like Airflow, Kafka, or similar.API Design: Experience designing and maintaining secure, scalable, and performant RESTful or GraphQL APIs.Front-End Awareness: While this role is backend-focused, exposure to front-end frameworks and tools could aid cross-functional collaboration.Experience managing budgets.Experience working within the FinTech industry & having worked in a startup is beneficial.Experience in building and managing high-performance teams.
