The Energy Analyst role will support the Lead Energy Analyst across the electricity and gas markets for our clients. The gas clients are generally large industrials with significant gas requirements, while electricity clients include generation asset owners such as wind farms, solar farms, fossil generators, and batteries. The energy analyst role is focused on the economic and commercial aspects of the electricity and gas markets and how economic factors impact their participation in these markets.
The Energy Analyst role is a key supporting role within the Energy One business that manages the interface between our operational trading services function and our clients. The role provides research and analysis into the economic factors affecting our gas and electricity clients.
What you will be doing
Conducting in-depth research and analysis on various energy market aspects and their relationships, including generation, market demand, prices, and policies. Assessing the economic implications of energy policies, regulations, and incentives implemented by the government and market reforms by the Australian Energy Market Operator, on the National Electricity Market (NEM), Whole Electricity Market (WEM), Declared Wholesale Gas Market (DWGM), and Short-Term Trading Market (STTM). Analysing the impact of policy changes on energy production, consumption, and investment for clients of the organization, and summarizing key findings. Developing economic models and simulations using Excel and VBA to analyse complex energy systems and scenarios, considering: Supply and Demand Dynamics Market Structure Cost Structures Global Influences Consumer Behaviour Market Speculation Conducting financial and economic analyses of energy projects for the organization's clients and investments to evaluate their economic viability. Collaborating with the team to create a monthly newsletter that highlights key market changes, summaries on ASX futures and CAPS products, as well as current and future regulations and economic impacts, to provide stakeholders with information on industry changes and energy market trends. Conducting other ad hoc market data analyses which involve studying data, trends, and economic indicators to understand and present the dynamics of energy markets. Creating reports for clients on energy and operational activities within the gas and electricity markets to outline and record business needs. Knowledge and Experience
The Australian gas and electricity markets Commercial analysis and advice on gas and electricity portfolio optimisation strategies Understanding of gas and electricity price forecasting techniques Knowledge of energy market interdependencies that influence spot and contract prices Tertiary qualifications in one or more of the following disciplines: Economics, Law, Business, and/or Engineering Skills and Abilities
A high level of analytical skills utilising Microsoft Excel, with utilisation of databases and coding such as Visual Basic, Python, and Java Excellent written and verbal communication skills Well-articulated report writing skills that appropriately cover the specific project being undertaken for a client including providing recommendations.
