Lismore Base Hospital / Ballina District Hospital / Casino & District Memorial Hospital An exciting opportunity is available at Lismore Base Hospital for an Emergency Medicine Stage 1 Trainee (Previously Provisional Trainee).
The successful applicants will gain valuable experience in our hospital in the beautiful Northern NSW LHD / Richmond Network, working under the guidance of highly experienced senior clinicians as part of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine's (ACEM) training program.

The Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) Emergency Department (ED) sees over 40,000 adult and paediatric presentations per year and is a regional trauma centre.
The department includes modern facilities such as a 4 bed resuscitation and procedure bay, acute zone, an ED short stay unit (EDSSU), fast tract and medical imaging services.

LBH ED also supports Richmond Network hospitals including Ballina District Hospital (18,000 presentations per annum) and Casino Memorial District Hospital (14,000 presentations per annum), and Multipurpose Centres located at Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Bonalbo.
Emergency Medicine Training with opportunities to undertake 24 months accredited time across training stages 1 to 3, and training stage 4 at LBH ED, plus opportunities to rotate to ACEM accredited terms in Retrieval, Anaesthetics, ICU, Medical Education and Ultrasound.

Education: We offer weekly paid protected education sessions including simulation, clinical skills, case reviews, radiology, and paediatrics.
Additional structured programs are offered to trainees preparing for ACEM primary and fellowship exams.
LBH also supports trainees with funding opportunities for external education activities including Alfred Health Emergency Procedures Course and ACEM Associateship of Pre Hospital and Retrieval Medicine.

Where you'll be working
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.

The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University.
The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay.
This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter.
From lush hinterland villages, to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.

What you'll be doing The primary purpose of a Trainee – Stage 1 in Emergency Medicine is to provide safe and high-quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and admitted to inpatient wards when rotating to inpatient specialities.
The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborative manner.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee's skills, knowledge and experience.
The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO).
All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner.
All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

The position supports meeting the requirements for Stage 1 training with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM).


Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
