The opportunityThe role of Research Projects staff at CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific and technological activities with research teams by assisting with planning, conducting experimental, observational, or technology development work, and handling the practical aspects of the projects.
Data61 is the digital specialist arm of CSIRO, Australia's national science agency. It hosts one of the world's largest collections of expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science, alongside cutting-edge facilities like the Mixed Reality Lab, Robotics Innovation Centre, and AI4Cyber Enclave. Its research spans AI, robotics, cybersecurity, modelling, and analytics.
As part of the Distributed Sensing Systems research group, you will develop and deploy low-power embedded sensing technology for natural and built environments to solve industry challenges. This includes validating and testing IoT devices in real-world settings, as well as contributing to commercialisation and business development efforts.
Your duties will include:Development, validation and debugging of IoT hardware platformsWork with and validate hardware functionality based on data sheets, schematics, and Printed Circuit Board designsManagement of logistics to source and deploy IoT technologiesEmbedded software development for low-power embedded devicesData collection from high-frequency time-series and image-based sensorsLow-power wireless communication protocols such as Bluetooth Low Energy, LoRa, LTEEmbedded analytics software, including machine learningWeb- and smartphone-based graphical user interface for live sensor data visualisationGeneration of high-quality ground truth data sets for algorithm improvementCommunicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients, and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO's reputation.Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks under limited direction in support of scientific research.Adapt and/or develop original experimental methods/equipment/software/concepts/ideas in support of existing and further research.Location: Pullenvale (Brisbane), Queensland

Under CSIRO policy, only candidates who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
Proficiency in developing applications for low-power embedded devices (e.g., Nordic NRF52), with experience in embedded operating systems such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS.Experience in developing software for embedded Linux devices (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone, or Jetson devices).Demonstrated expertise in implementing and deploying low-power wireless networks, including BLE, 802.15.4, LoRaWAN, LTE-M, and NB-IoT.Experience with PCB design software (e.g., Altium Designer or equivalent) for designing and/or reviewing schematics and PCB layouts.Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary, regionally dispersed research team and to carry out tasks under general direction from Scientific Researchers.Willingness and ability to contribute novel ideas and approaches to support scientific investigations.Desirable Experience with field-testing IT systems, including user studies, field experiments, analysis of field trial data, and in-situ debugging.Experience designing user interfaces for interacting with embedded devices (e.g., web or phone apps).Familiarity with 3D CAD modelling tools (e.g., SolidWorks).For full details about this role please view the Position Description.
