Our Science, Technology, and Medical Journals (STMJ) division manages an extensive collection of high impact journals. We are responsible for managing existing journals and society relationships, launching new journals, and acquiring new society journals to ensure growth and customer satisfaction. We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic individual to join the Health and Medical Sciences (HMS) team as Publisher and manage a portfolio of health and medical titles in Sydney, Australia. This is a mixture of Australian society owned titles with international audiences, and proprietary titles.
The position reports into an Executive Publisher based in Sydney. There is an extended team of colleagues in the group in Beijing, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, London and Oxford who report into a Publishing Director in Amsterdam.
About the Role
You will have responsibility for a journal portfolio (hybrid and Open Access) within our Health and Medical Journals group, many of which are owned by highly respected Australian societies and have an international audience. You will also work on related projects and initiatives that help deliver innovation and growth to our organization. And you will build successful partnerships with individuals and institutions to develop mutually beneficial long-term collaboration.
This is a permanent full-time role based in our head office in Chatswood, Sydney, with the opportunity to have a hybrid home/office based working environment and flexible work-life balance.
Responsibilities
Portfolio Management and Development
Develop and implement the strategy for the portfolio; ensure alignment with the wider organisation's strategies. Work with editors, authors, editorial boards and the academic community at large to ensure sufficient copy flow of relevant, high quality manuscripts. Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors and societies. Continuous and pro-active maintenance of the existing portfolio, matching developments in the external marketplace, including the development of Open Access initiatives. Continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day editorial, production and publishing operations, actively addressing improvements where required. Meet portfolio related objectives with regards to content growth, market share, citation share, impact metrics, editorial speeds and author and editor satisfaction. Manage the editorial fees budget and provide input to pricing processes. Experience in data gathering, presentation and interpretation. Relationship Management, Teamwork and Networking
Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts and networks with key external stakeholders, including editors, authors, society representatives, university leadership and industry, with a view to understanding their professional and organizational needs and ongoing market developments. Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts with key stakeholders within the company, including editorial, production, publishing, marketing and technology teams, coordinating activities as they relate to the portfolio's needs and development. Teamwork: you will need to work closely with team members and other publishing colleagues to help deliver on collaborative projects and goals. Requirements
University Degree (Bachelors or Masters) - essential Minimum of 4 years' publishing experience - desirable Experience of working with international research communities, adopting a range of communication channels, and delivering great customer experience - desirable Strong can-do attitude and team-oriented approach Integrity/commitment to the business Strong organisational and commercial skills The ability to build, nurture and manage sensitive relationships with key external and internal stakeholders The ability to work efficiently and productively with colleagues and customers at different levels, in different locations, and from different cultures Requirement to work across time zones A keen interest in the journal publishing business and the Australian scientific publishing landscape Up to date knowledge of technology, social media and content enhancement in the academic/research arena The ability to identify and understand market needs for potential business opportunities Willingness to travel 20-30% of the time and engage regularly with overseas based contacts and colleagues Work in a way that works for you
