The Role
The EL2 Program Director is required to exercise a significant degree of independence and perform an important leadership role. They will be responsible for influencing and developing strategies, priorities and operational practices in support of Defence objectives based on high level decision making and judgement.

They will provide strategic advice to senior leadership and stakeholders as well as leading and assuming accountability for very complex work that has strategic, political and/or operational significance. The EL2 Program Director will be accountable to lead a work team or teams, plan and manage a range of human and physical resources and exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities.

They will provide strategic direction to Defence Legal, including involvement in the development of business plans, strategies and priorities, and monitor work flow and performance. They are accountable for developing, coaching and reviewing individual, team and business performance, and will identify opportunities for building team capability and continuous improvement. They will set work aligned with strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes. This position has people management responsibility and as such you will be required to exercise your people management skills and knowledge to lead a high performing and cohesive team.

The successful candidate will be a team-focused individual who is able to deliver professional outcomes and support our executive teams. You will have the ability to build the strategic capability of the Division through the development of business improvement initiatives and ensuring compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission administrative requirements.

We are seeking candidates with significant and relevant Business & Program Management experience. They will be accountable to ensure they have knowledge of, and compliance with, legislative frameworks and policy requirements. Essential to your success will be your ability to lead and draw together the multi-disciplined teams who work in the Branch.

Our ideal candidate will:

Promote and develop strategic thinking in support of senior legal executives.

Identify and integrate strategic input in the development of policy and doctrine affecting the Defence Legal organisation.

Communicate and influence in a clear, concise and articulate manner, both in writing and orally.

Engage and work collaboratively with stakeholders and negotiate in a persuasive manner to achieve business outcomes.

Provide superior leadership and management of a Division, including leading change and transformation initiatives in support of business objectives.

Demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to identify best-fit solutions.

Build and sustain the strategic capabilities of Defence Legal Division by providing concise and consistent communication, setting clear performance expectations and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people.

Exhibit Department of Defence Values, respect diversity, and foster a culture of ingenuity and agility.

Contribute significantly to shaping and delivering strategic priorities by anticipating and responding to external factors that may impact the Divisions business operations, identify solutions, promote good governance, and make sound decisions based on opportunity and risk-based outcomes within a complex environment to achieve Defence Legal objectives.

Strong interpersonal, team-building and stakeholder engagement skills.

Highly developed communication skills and be able to demonstrate excellent attention to detail.

Can work effectively as part of a team or autonomously as required.
