As the Technical Staff Officer - Explosives (TSO-X) you will be the lead Defence subject matter expert in explosives as applied to military ordnance. You will deliver Defence policy and provide specialist advice regarding characteristics of explosives as they pertain to Defence guided weapons and Explosive Ordnance (EO). You will lead and mentor the EO community across Defence.
The duties of the Executive Level 1 TSO-X include the following:
Lead the development of Defence policy for the safe through-life management of explosives and energetic material.Provide specialist advice contributing to the development of EO publications.As a member of a team, contribute to the development of policy to ensure guided weapons and EO used by Defence are safe and suitable for service. Provide the lead on Qualification of Energetic Material.Lead and mentor the broader Defence guided weapons and EO enterprise on explosives characteristics, which impacts on Safety and Suitability for Service of EO. Represent Defence on international committees dedicated to energetic materials, in particular NATO working groups. The Explosives Safety Regulatory Framework (ESRF) is an outcome focused, principle based framework, which aligns with Commonwealth Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation for managing the risks that Explosive Ordnance presents. The ESRF integrates with and supports Defence work health and safety policy and other related Defence regulatory systems that enable Defence Capability.
The Directorate of Ordnance Safety (DOS) administers the ESRF for Defence, maintaining the knowledge necessary to inform the management of critical explosives safety risks within the Defence Enterprise. This provides exciting opportunities to build upon your existing engineering and chemistry experience, developing specialist explosives and engineering skillsets, and advising innovative and novel Defence projects.
Our Ideal Candidate
Whilst mentoring and on-job training will be provided in this specialist field, you will have a well-developed understanding and knowledge of chemical technology as it relates to through life management of explosives and energetic material. A relevant science or engineering degree is essential.

A proven ability to lead a diverse team of highly qualified and motivated subject matter expertsExcellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills and experience in drafting briefs and reports on complex and highly technical issues to senior executive boards and committeesA proven ability to work independently and as part of a teamA proven ability to cultivate strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, communicating with influence, including with international partnersA deep level understanding of international best practice for development, testing, assessment and qualification of energetic materialsA deep level understanding of materiel safety and associated standards and codes of practice.A deep level understanding of munition lifecycles, and associated hazards arising from exposure to lifecycle environments.Information Pack Opens in new window
